But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? Hebrews 2:6 KJV

We don’t know exactly who wrote Hebrews, but we know the source he drew upon for today’s scripture: David, in Psalm 8:4. In making the argument that Jesus is the supreme example of humankind, Hebrews highlights David’s wonder that people are the pinnacle of God’s creation: “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visitest him?” (Psalm 8:3-4).

It is a mystery that God loves “man”—men and women both—so much that He would send Jesus to die on a cross for our sins. Conversely, only sin can explain mankind’s dismissal of the infinite Creator God whose handiwork is so readily apparent (see Romans 1:18-25). Such blatant disrespect of such an awe-inspiring God explains the harshness of His wrath on the unrepentant.

Thankfully, we are not among those who wave a puny fist at Him—as followers of Jesus, we have humbly accepted His incredibly generous offer of salvation. Like David, may we always stand in awe of the vastness of God’s universe and the individual attention He lavishes on each one of us.

Prayer: Lord, You are truly awesome. Thank You for being mindful of me!
