Yes I think so too. However, masks and other precautions raise our awareness. By habit we do not go too close to others. This must be of some good.

Every job has PPE. Some require more than others.
There are different kinds of N95 masks; they do not all provide the same level of protection.
If COVID as as deadly and infectious as they said it was and....the tests actually worked then everyone would need a higher level of PPE to go near any hotspot. The movie "Outbreak" (1995) is a great example of this using a fictional virus (based on Ebola) and how such an endemic can happen and escalate to a pandemic. Not 100% but highly accurate.
Most of the world would not have been able to get this level of PPE.
What most of the world can get, regarding sickness, are cheap, non-protective surgical masks. Their purpose is to reduce droplet spread by the wearer during surgery. Most people who have surgeries requiring hospitalization will automatically get antibiotics by default. Post surgery SOP.
Optimally, if you are sick, you should stay home and not go to work until you do not have a fever or are cleared by your doctor. A fever is sign of active infection meaning the more people you are around, even briefly can get sick.
Surgical masks will not protect others.
No illness is asymptomatic. Some STDs can be but they are not your cold/flu/resipiratory illnesses where you can exhale/cough/sneeze and infect others.
I've said this many times. People die from the flu, it's vaccine, and the pneumonia that can escalate from the flu every year but there's no outcry, no protests, nothing about improving these problems.
Remember the Zika outbreak? Barely. It is smaller than COVID and only the best PPE would prevent you from getting it and even then you'd need a 2 stage cleaning room and system in order to don/doff the PPE.
I again refer to the movie above and a series called "Hot Zone". S1 deals with one virus and the 2nd with Anthrax which I have yet to watch.
I don't know everything of course and people can make mistakes. As a Christian, male, who's gift from God is Helping there is no reason or desire to deceive anyone. Believe me or don't.
