Tell It To God! - September 30, 2006

An elderly man grumbles, "I left the Church because all they wanted to focus on were feel-good topics like peace and joy! I wanted to hear more of the old fire-and-brimstone type sermons that my grand-pappy used to preach! These youngsters of today have no fear of Hell, and that is what they really need!"

A young woman complains, "I really got away from my faith because it was such a turn-off to hear about the dangers of sin and Hell. I wanted to hear more about Christ's teachings on love and forgiveness. Topics like that make me feel good!"

There is an old saying that goes something like this: "You can't please all of the people all of the time, but you CAN please SOME of the people SOME of the time."

I suspect this is why the Scriptures were not divinely-inspired by one sole individual; but rather, numerous men and women of God who each had unique ways of relaying the same truth. While one writer may prefer a more direct and confrontational approach, another may communicate a similar message in song, psalm or more flowery language.

Perhaps God knew that diverse ways of communicating Scripture can be as unique as its reading or listening audience, regardless of whether one is hearing Biblical truths within the four walls of a church, taught within the home by parent to child, or read over the Internet in a medium such as Daily Wisdom.

To focus on only one aspect of the Scriptures does the whole work injustice. One cannot preach of Christ's joy, without also speaking on His tears and suffering. So, too, can we not talk only about life, without also considering the realities of death.

The truth of the many diverse Bible subjects may not always be what we want to hear at any given moment, but I believe that if a topic is important to God, then it should be important to us.
