However I'm not coming from the traditional perspective that speaks of men simply needing

to get to the top of the leadership ladder and take back their voice. While there is some value

to that perspective, I'm speaking more about how fathers have failed their families and as a result

women often as left to make certain decision and raise families apart from fathers and with much

pain.


I agree with you, and I"ll add however that many women find themselves in the position of head of household

Great question.

First I'll begin by sharing that I'm not disagreeing that many women are being deceived; however what
I am saying is that instead of standing and pointing the finger or accusation men can facilitate greater
changed by extending a helping arm to pull them out of the situation.

Brother, @PloughBoy , you are wise on many levels and I need not tell you that you can have a women
who has many issues, but if the right man comes into that picture and leads and loves like Christ, that
makes a world of difference. Women crave the protection, leadership, and guidance of a strongman.
This is absent on many levels.

I'm not disagreeing on your assessment of the problem, however I'm am emphasizing that more
return on effort can be made if men step up to save the families.

Now to your question above. Great question. So the first point I'll note is that I initially didn't have
many Black adult clients. I would get children clients who were African American because the
school would refer for help in the school, but the AA community (and with reason) has a
history of not trusting many organizations such as healthcare. Furthermore the stigma of
mental health in the Black community is high because many feel that if you go the counseling then you have a lack of faith.

However in the last year the number of my African American client's has increased as I've noticed that
more are seeking therapy (Christian counseling also) and that is positive.

So that first thing I'll say with your question is fortunately the number of African American clients
on my caseload (adults) is growing; yet it is still small as a smaller percentage seek therapy.
The ones that do unfortunately are not often married. The ones that I have had that were married
were older couples, a bit more mature, and had issues related to communication, etc rather than
the church.

The dynamic you raise in your question is really a dynamic between a husband and a wife
as many women who are not married but have a boyfriend, don't give their boyfriend that same
control over their life management as a wife would. Thus, since most couples I see, Black and White,
especially in the Black community, are not married, I don't see that issue of him getting mad
at the pastor because he already knows that since he is not her husband, she has not given him
control over her finances. And to had a third piece, many young couples are pulling away from the
church.

And another piece I'll add is that we really need to put down this myth of the Black Pimp preacher
being the normative setup in the African American community. This just isn't true.

This is simply not the case in my experience. Not saying it doesn't happen, I'm saying it is not the norm.
My father was a minister in Liberia (UMC), we came to the USA and he was a minister here with the UMC.
He also was on the board of ordain ministers, and later became Director of Strengthening the Black Church,
a new position in our conference due to the dying old Black churches, needing more growth. He traveled
to the various churches (and I did with him at times) doing workshops at churches, etc.



First let's talk about lust and then culture.

So with lust, you have such issues in all churches.

The Catholic church had their lust issues with the priest and little boys:

So the lust is everywhere.
Now in the traditional Black church it is just manifested in a different way culturally.
However I fear even using the term "Black church" because about 85% of people reading
this post likely have no where need the diversity of church experience that I have and thus
will assume that there is such a thing as a "Black church". There really isn't. You have Blacks
in country churches and city churches. Blacks in Methodist and AME churches. Blacks are Catholics
and Blacks are part of nondenominational assemblies. So there really isn't a "Black Church" per say.

And with that said, and with likely 75% likely maybe still not understanding that, I'll continue and
say that this idea of the "Black Pimp preacher" is so small in the so called "Black Church" (which doesn't exist).

Yes, that happens, the Black Pimp preacher as defined as the pastor who is using the church for his
personal needs. However, I see this as a cultural manifestation of the same problem every church
is dealing with. In the Catholic church is was more perhaps forced sexual contact, in the "Black Church"
it is likely more consensual. Same sin, different cultural applications.

And these issues of the "Black Pimp Pastor" I would say is more of an issue in smaller non-denominational churches, and not
organized churches like the UMC. In the UMC there is the DS (District Superintendent ) the Bishop, the Conference , and the local
churches have laity committees who have influence and oversight.

Furthermore, another good thing I like about the UMC is their itinerant system in which they rotate the Pastors, so the Pastors don't stay
long at one church and feel like they are King. They are moved around in the conference.

So that Narrative of the "Black Pimp Pastor" may be a issue in "some" nondenominational churches or smaller churches with less
oversight and accountability. But not the norm in Black churches that are part of an organized denominations like the UMC. Not saying
it doesn't happen in denominational churches, just saying it is not the norm from my experience .

Have 2 black pastors, and 4 white ones. The congregation is a mix of, white, black, Hispanic, Indian (India), Oriental, and mixed cultures that could be identified as one or another of the ones already mentioned.

What the subject reminded me of, was attending a breakfast at what would be considered a Black Church, non-denominal. The invitation was by a female member of the church who I worked with along with two other Black Co-Workers. The invite was to a Saturday breakfast of which I was the only non-black person in attendance. Unintentionally, it appeared our sitting arrangement had us around/buffer with our female co-worker. Observing the pastor one could help but feel his immediate dislike of us. I felt the Spirit move in me that there was something wrong with this man. He seemed agitated that not only me, but the other two male co-workers were there with the female who we later came to find out he was interested in, even though he was married! This was confirmed later, when he welcomed other people who were new, but made zero effort to welcome me and the other two co-workers! It didn't bother me at all, because I was there for the cooking!!!!! I know selfish of me!

Anyway, when she got up to help the other ladies with serving the food, I observed the Pastor's eyes following her around. This just confirmed the Spirit's movement within me. I also talked later with the two other gentlemen on their impressions, and they had the same observations that I did. We all warned our female co-worker to take care and be careful around that man. Also, not to be alone with him. I couldn't even call him pastor to be honest. Wolf would have been a more appropriate description for how he came off to us.

Faith, trust, church, can make us feel safe in what one would consider a safe haven, because it's supposed to be of God, or His House! So, we, and mostly women get blinded to the danger that is present in this world no matter where you happen to find yourself!!! To make a long story shorter. This married Pastor, gradually started to make a move on her. I guess, what helped her was that before an accident happened at work, along with having Lupus, she was a Correctional Officer, and so had training in ways to protect herself. Anyway, she rebuffed his advances, and being crooked in one way, also guaranteed he be that way in other ways as well.

You would think with both his father, and brother being pastors, and well thought of ones, that he'd have followed or sought their guidance, at the very least, but apparently not. His downfall started to happen when he was the pastor for the State University Basketball team, and he basically neglected his duties to them, so as to make time for his other activities! Eventually, it tore apart his marriage, and eventually lost the pastoring of his church as well. How the mighty have fallen.

What I did notice from conversations with my female co-worker was that the other females in the church became aware of the Pastor's advances, but instead of blaming the supposed man of God, they blamed her!!! Women at times can be worse than men when it comes to dealing with the same gender.

It's like you say Brother, lust is everywhere. It's getting worse, and worse, and as the churches become more like the world, they can't help but bring it into what is supposed to be the House of God too. We need to keep the pastoral teams, families, and each other in constant prayer! Most when reminded will give it a couple of prayers, and then move on. I'm not immune to be negligent in this area either. If I am being aware of the difficulties out there do little in this area of prayer, how much less do others!!! It's a shame I feel and I'm sure others do as well, and hopefully changes, because we all need to be doing it!

So, I'm starting to ramble, and need to go get some food for my sons and me! Love you all, and the discussion, that few even realize exist that are not from churches that have one predominate culture attending. Dangerous times we live in.

I guess, what helped her was that before an accident happened at work, along with having Lupus, she was a Correctional Officer, and so had training in ways to protect herself. Anyway, she rebuffed his advances, and being crooked in one way, also guaranteed he be that way in other ways as well.

You would think with both his father, and brother being pastors, and well thought of ones, that he'd have followed or sought their guidance, at the very least, but apparently not. His downfall started to happen when he was the pastor for the State University Basketball team, and he basically neglected his duties to them, so as to make time for his other activities! Eventually, it tore apart his marriage, and eventually lost the pastoring of his church as well. How the mighty have fallen.

What I did notice from conversations with my female co-worker was that the other females in the church became aware of the Pastor's advances, but instead of blaming the supposed man of God, they blamed her!!! Women at times can be worse than men when it comes to dealing with the same gender.

It's like you say Brother, lust is everywhere. It's getting worse, and worse, and as the churches become more like the world, they can't help but bring it into what is supposed to be the House of God too. We need to keep the pastoral teams, families, and each other in constant prayer! Most when reminded will give it a couple of prayers, and then move on. I'm not immune to be negligent in this area either. If I am being aware of the difficulties out there do little in this area of prayer, how much less do others!!! It's a shame I feel and I'm sure others do as well, and hopefully changes, because we all need to be doing it!

Interesting subject to say the least. (Black Pimp Preachers)
First, I'm not black, I'm Hispanic. Yet I don't attend a church that is Hispanic, but actually a mix, or let's just say, very diversified.
Have 2 black pastors, and 4 white ones. The congregation is a mix of, white, black, Hispanic, Indian (India), Oriental, and mixed cultures that could be identified as one or another of the ones already mentioned.

What the subject reminded me of, was attending a breakfast at what would be considered a Black Church, non-denominal. The invitation was by a female member of the church who I worked with along with two other Black Co-Workers. The invite was to a Saturday breakfast of which I was the only non-black person in attendance. Unintentionally, it appeared our sitting arrangement had us around/buffer with our female co-worker. Observing the pastor one could help but feel his immediate dislike of us. I felt the Spirit move in me that there was something wrong with this man. He seemed agitated that not only me, but the other two male co-workers were there with the female who we later came to find out he was interested in, even though he was married! This was confirmed later, when he welcomed other people who were new, but made zero effort to welcome me and the other two co-workers! It didn't bother me at all, because I was there for the cooking!!!!! I know selfish of me!

Anyway, when she got up to help the other ladies with serving the food, I observed the Pastor's eyes following her around. This just confirmed the Spirit's movement within me. I also talked later with the two other gentlemen on their impressions, and they had the same observations that I did. We all warned our female co-worker to take care and be careful around that man. Also, not to be alone with him. I couldn't even call him pastor to be honest. Wolf would have been a more appropriate description for how he came off to us.

Faith, trust, church, can make us feel safe in what one would consider a safe haven, because it's supposed to be of God, or His House! So, we, and mostly women get blinded to the danger that is present in this world no matter where you happen to find yourself!!! To make a long story shorter.
