1Cor 12:12; For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ.
1Cor 12:13; For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
1Cor 12:14; For the body is not one member, but many.
1Cor 12:15; If the foot says, "Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body," it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body.
1Cor 12:16; And if the ear says, "Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body," it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body.
1Cor 12:17; If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be?
1Cor 12:18; But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired.
1Cor 12:19; If they were all one member, where would the body be?
1Cor 12:20; But now there are many members, but one body.
1Cor 12:21; And the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you"; or again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you."
1Cor 12:22; On the contrary, it is much truer that the members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary;
1Cor 12:23; and those members of the body which we deem less honorable, on these we bestow more abundant honor, and our less presentable members become much more presentable,
1Cor 12:24; whereas our more presentable members have no need of it. But God has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that member which lacked,
1Cor 12:25; so that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another.
1Cor 12:26; And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
1Cor 12:27; Now you are Christ's body, and individually members of it.
1Cor 12:28; And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues.
1Cor 12:29; All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they?
1Cor 12:30; All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they?
1Cor 12:31; But earnestly desire the greater gifts. And I show you a still more excellent way.

This passage written by Paul to a Gentile church ( Corinth ) is talking about a body. The hands, the feet, the ears, the eyes, now what is this passage about a human body doing here.
Why is it in a chapter talking about prophesying, speaking in tongues, teaching, healing, etc...
Because the human body needs these things in order to function correctly. If all these things aren't working correctly, the body is lame, infirmed, disabled in some way.
If no one speaks in tongues, the body is weaker. If everyone does nothing but speak in tongues, the body is even weaker.

It's the same for the church. There is a lot of focus on speaking in tongues for whatever reason. But the church doesn't need everyone to speak in tongues.
It needs some prophets, some teachers, some miracle workers, some with the ability to heal, .. and yes even some who speak in tongues.

Everyone in the body has a gift whether they know it or not. Everyone. You might be a hand, or a foot, or an eye, or an ear.. but you fit into the body of the church one way or another.

1Cor 12:8; For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit;
1Cor 12:9; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
1Cor 12:10; and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.
1Cor 12:11; But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

I've seen these gifts in just about everyone here on TalkJesus at one time or another. If you've posted a message on here at some point.. it's because you had a word of wisdom or a word of knowledge.
Pretty of people of here have shared testimonies about extraordinary faith in trying circumstances. People have been healed, people have seen miracles, people have cast out demons...

and yes, some have spoken in tongues. So, with all the people I see on here every day giving words of wisdom, giving words of knowledge, telling of miracles that happens, people getting healed, etc...
obviously some of you have the gift of teaching. So then why pick on tongues? If you yourself have one of these gifts ( and everyone does ) then why tell someone else they don't have a particular gift.
How would you even know if they did or not? Obviously, you could see if someone was healed or a prophecy came true, but some of the other gifts are harder to see.

I get concerned about some churches where tongues is the emphasis. Tongues, tongues, and more tongues. Doesn't anybody heal? Doesn't anybody prophesy?

It's much the same way here on TalkJesus. Everyone has a word of knowledge, everyone has a word of wisdom, everyone thinks they have the gift of teaching. ( but not all do )

Jas 3:1; Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.

This body is just as over-loaded with teachers ( or at least those who think they are teachers ) as some churches where everyone just speaks in tongues.

Now while many of you are good teachers, many of you aren't. Not everyone is a teacher.

1Tim 1:7; wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.

But the point here is, if you have the gift of teaching, or the gift of knowledge, or the gift of wisdom... then that means that the gifts are still if effect.
No cessation. Not even of tongues. Either the gifts are all still here, or none of them are.

The division of the "gifts of the Spirit" will continue, as many other things, until Christ comes and settles it.

Some of the scholars compare "the gifts of the Spirit" with the Old Covenant.

Paul explained that the Old Covenant was ready to vanish away when the New Covenant arrived in Christ.

The Old Covenant completely pointed to Christ, when He came and fulfilled the Old Covenant which pointed to Him that Covenant stepped aside for the new.

The same is said of "the gifts of the Spirit," These gifts pointed to Christ in the building of His Church, until what we needed to know (The New Testament of Scripture) was given and circulation world wide.

Then these gifts took a back seat as did the Old Covenant, not dead and finished, but set aside from their original purpose.

It's true some of these gifts are still in effect, but so is the Moral Law of the Law of Moses. Both the gifts and the Old Covenant are still alive in part.

It's their "original purpose" that is vanished away.

What about the scripture that says His Spirit will be poured out in the last days? Maybe to combat the attitude that they are gone perhaps?

What about the scripture that says His Spirit will be poured out in the last days? Maybe to combat the attitude that they are gone perhaps?

This is my opinion, it's my summary from Scripture.

The pouring out of the Spirit by God is a continuous event. It began at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came to dwell in man permanently, and Peter addressed the whole of it until Christ comes. It will take place throughout the entire Church Age in different ways.

The Scripture also mentions the pouring out of the Spirit to Israel on the day of their salvation, the pouring out is measured at many times in this Church Age and will continue until Christ comes, as eluded to by Peter.

Acts 2:16-21

"But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:

For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;

And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:

The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come:

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved."

Acts 2:16; but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel:
Acts 2:17; 'AND IT SHALL BE IN THE LAST DAYS,' God says, 'THAT I WILL POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT ON ALL MANKIND; AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY, AND YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE VISIONS, AND YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM DREAMS;
Acts 2:18; EVEN ON MY BONDSLAVES, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, I WILL IN THOSE DAYS POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT And they shall prophesy.
Acts 2:19; 'AND I WILL GRANT WONDERS IN THE SKY ABOVE AND SIGNS ON THE EARTH BELOW, BLOOD, AND FIRE, AND VAPOR OF SMOKE.
Acts 2:20; 'THE SUN WILL BE TURNED INTO DARKNESS AND THE MOON INTO BLOOD, BEFORE THE GREAT AND GLORIOUS DAY OF THE LORD SHALL COME.
Acts 2:21; 'AND IT SHALL BE THAT EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.'

It seems the pouring out of the Spirit results to salvation.

When it happened on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2, it resulted in about 3,000 being saved.

When it takes place in the future at the very end of the Great Tribulation, it results in all of Israel being saved.

This is only my opinion so don't quote me on this.

In between the pouring out of the Spirit at Pentecost and the pouring out on Israel, is the Church Age. So far it has covered almost 2,000 years.

It is my opinion that during this period of time that when any person is saved, that is the pouring out of God's Spirit resulting in salvation.

But this is just my own opinion, I have no Scripture support for this to nail it down.
