The Cabbage Patch - August 29, 2006
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9
"Your favorite", my mom would tell me. "You were only about two or three, but how you loved that book! Every time it got to the AH-CHOO sneeze part, you would wait expectantyly, knowing what was coming, and laugh and laugh."
To this day, it is my very favorite children's book. The illustrations are too wonderful. I've read it to my own grandchildren so many times I practically have it memorized.
In the story, Beatrix Potter relates how Peter starts off fine. When his mom leaves on an errand, he goes in a different direction from his brothers and sisters, "straight away to Mr. McGregor's garden." First he eats some turnips and green beans, and then feeling rather sick, he eats some parsley.
Next for Peter was fright and flight. After finding the gate and squeezing under it, he was able to scamper home. That made for a happy ending, though Peter didn't get perks as the others. He got a scolding, and loving care from Mrs. Rabbit.
I can relate; things are good in the family with my brothers and sisters. Then I am disobedient to my (heavenly) father. I mess up. Then I choose a self cure; fix things myself; my way.
When I get to fright/flight stage, usually I realize I have a problem, and I cannot fix things- or myself. The happy ending here is getting back "home" to my Abba Father, where it is safe, and He takes care of me.
Lord, please help me realize the cabbage patch might be what I want, not You. Help me to remember today that my way is never better than Your way. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.
