and said, "Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. "Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. "Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me. Matthew 18:3-5 NKJV
Those who have small children know better than anyone that they are, more than anything, pictures of complete dependency. Children have little to offer—other than love and outstretched hands ready to receive and open arms showing their need to be held and comforted.
When Jesus said, “Unless you change and become like little children, you will never center the kingdom of heaven,” He was letting His listeners know that they needed to be utterly dependent on God, in much the same way a child is dependent on its parents for all things. That, He said, was a requirement for entering God’s eternal kingdom.
You can never earn God’s favor based on your own merits or works. Rather, you receive all good things from God when you approach Him as a child approaches its parents.
Prayer: Lord, I confess that I have nothing to offer You but a completely dependent heart. You desire that I humble myself like a child, extending nothing but empty hands longing to receive from You what I could never provide for myself. I trust You for everything I need to one day see Your eternal kingdom.
