Rev 6:2; I looked, and behold, a white horse, and he who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.
Rev 6:3; When He broke the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, "Come."
Rev 6:4; And another, a red horse, went out; and to him who sat on it, it was granted to take peace from the earth, and that men would slay one another; and a great sword was given to him.
Rev 6:5; When He broke the third seal, I heard the third living creature saying, "Come." I looked, and behold, a black horse; and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand.
Rev 6:6; And I heard something like a voice in the center of the four living creatures saying, "A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not damage the oil and the wine."
Rev 6:7; When the Lamb broke the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, "Come."
Rev 6:8; I looked, and behold, an ashen horse; and he who sat on it had the name Death; and Hades was following with him. Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by the wild beasts of the earth.

The context here is Revelation 6. The first four of the seven seals are about the four horsemen. Are they literal horsemen or just metaphors? It's hard to say, I don't think anyone knows for sure.
The horses themselves don't really represent anything but perhaps the four different colors do. It's the riders that this passage is really about.
In any case, the first rider goes forth conquering. Conquering who? But it seems this may be financial, political and economic conquering more than military war.

The second rider takes peace from the earth, and now men start to slay one another, The biggest wars in Earth's history would be World War I and World War II. But it seems this war will be bigger than even those.

The third rider has scales in his hands. Scales typically represent justice. Some courtrooms have a depiction a lady wearing a blindfold, holding the scales of justice. She is called lady justice.
However, this won't be Earthly justice administered by men. This will be God's justice. The amplified Bible puts verse 6 like this.

Rev 6:6; And I heard what seemed to be a voice from the midst of the four living creatures, saying, A quart of wheat for a denarius [a whole day's wages], and three quarts of barley for a denarius; but do not harm the oil and the wine! [2King 6:25]

Food will be very expensive ( it seems this already in progress, as food prices have almost tripled in the last five years ). A bag of wheat will cost a days pay.
According to CoPilot, the average salary in the US is $60,000.00. That comes out to about $230.00 a day or about £180 British pounds.. A loaf of bread, or a quart of wheat would cost $230.00 dollars if this happened today.
Only wheat and barley are specifically mentioned here, but the assumption is that all food will increase in price. I wonder how this will affect the price of many beers, as they are often made from barley.

On the other hand, it says "do not harm the oil and the wine". So does that mean wine will remain lower priced? Most wine is made from grapes so perhaps grapes will be cheaper.
The oil? Does this mean crude oil used petrol and gasoline? Or is this just cooking oils like olive oil, sunflower oil, and vegetable oil? I can tell you that here in the Northwest US, gasoline prices
have more than doubled in the last five years. When I graduated high school about 45 years ago. The average price on a new car was less than three thousand dollars ( $US). Now the average is closer to $50,000.
The average price of a house when I was in the military was about $40,000.00 Here in the northwest US, in Seattle and Portland the average price of houses is $850,000.00.
That's over a 2000 percent increase in my lifetime. Yes, wages have gone up, but they never match the inflation of the economy. The minimum wage in Washington state is $13.69 and the minimum wage
in Oregon is $14.70. It's my understanding most other states are lower. Texas for example is $7.25.

The fourth rider is given authority over a fourth of the earth. That's interesting, I've read this verse dozens of times, and never really noticed that it was only a "fourth" of the earth.
But people will be killed with famine, and weapons, and pestilence, and even by wild beasts. Perhaps food will be so scarce that wild animals start attacking people?
Famine is a shortage of food, there is still starvation in the world today, but less so than when I was younger. There are a lot of relief organizations and world hunger volunteers.
It seems the time will come when it will be much worse than it is now. Pestilence is a highly contagious sickness or disease epidemic. I suppose pandemics such as covid could qualify.
In any case it seems these things will be worse than anything we have ever seen history. This verse makes it clear that this won't only affect one city or even just one country. But at least a "fourth" of the Earth.
