The Great Commission
Well, it finally looks like summer's here. Everybody is planning trips, vacations, and activities. Ever planned a summer missions trip? How about at least planning some type of Gospel outreach into your summer? Now before you get bored or offended and quit reading, let me beg your indulgence for a bit more. If you love God; if Jesus Christ is your master; if you consider yourself a true disciple; well then this is paramount. The last thing Jesus said before departing earth was this: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." (Matt 28:18-20)
It appears that spreading the Gospel to all people was top priority to Jesus. Is it for you and me? "Yes, but..." is the common answer. Yes we love God and want to obey His Word, BUT my car, my house, my job, my spouse... There are so many other demands. Surely He understands. Actually He challenges each one of us to let go of this life, which seems so real but is only temporary, and to lay hold of our spiritual life, which is the real life.
Somehow we must believe more in God's promises and the unseen spiritual realm than in this physical world that shouts for our attention. Jesus told us to lay up treasure in heaven because it will last forever. What better treasure to enjoy for all eternity than souls of men and women everywhere. Now is the time for the true Disciples of Christ to begin living as soldiers of the Cross. According to Hebrews 12, "We'd better get on with it. Strip down, start running--and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we're in." God be with you as you follow Him...
