I prayed to the LORD my God and made confession, saying, "O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, we have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules. Daniel 9:4-5 ESV
After reading the prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah 25:11 and 29:10), Daniel believed the seventy-year Babylonian exile was drawing to an end (Daniel 9:1-2). His first impulse was to intercede for God’s people, confessing their sins, and saying he wasn’t presenting his pleas because of their righteousness, but because of God’s great mercy (9:18).
Daniel had to be in the scriptures regularly in order to understand that the seventy-year exile was indeed going to end. And then he had to be willing to intercede for God’s people. Does this resemble a pattern in your own life? Are you in the scriptures routinely enough to know how you should be interceding for your nation, your city, or your family? And are you aware enough of what’s going on in that you are able to confess their collective sins?
F.B. Meyer once said, “Let the first moments of the day, when the heart is fresh, be given to God. Never see the face of man until you have seen the King.” Are you willing to start your day this way?
Prayer: Lord give me the heart of an intercessor who is grounded solidly in Your word. I long to meet with You every morning for communion and instruction.
