The Key to Contentment

[Let your] conduct [be] without covetousness; [be] content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." So we may boldly say: "The LORD [is] my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?" Hebrews 13:5-6 NKJV

Who hasn’t looked at the possessions of those who are doing better and felt admiration and pangs of jealousy over what they have? That’s one of the reasons why it’s not a good idea to compare what you have with what someone else has. Not only that, God’s Word warns against doing that, labeling it as covetousness.

Today’s scripture passage strongly suggests that the key to contentment is trusting God to care for your needs rather than trusting in your own abilities. In that light, it echoes these words from Jesus Himself: “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” (Matthew 6:26 NIV).

It’s all about gratitude, isn’t it? That and trusting in a heavenly Father who’s looking out for you.

Prayer: Generous Father, sometimes I struggle to maintain a grateful attitude. Help me look into my own heart and root out any covetousness or jealousy, and then replace it with contentedness in You and what You do for me very day.
