This is the true story of a little black crayon and the unbelievably huge amount of damage it did.
A couple of days ago, I was walking thru my kitchen while cleaning house and saw one of my son's crayons on the kitchen table. I picked up the little black crayon and stuck it in my pant's pocket on my way to the laundry room thinking I would drop the little crayon off on my way to put away the folded laundry.
Last night, having forgotten all about the little black crayon that had been hidden in the folds of my pant's pocket, I opened the dryer door to remove a load of dry clothes for folding when....LOW AND BEHOLD...what did my eyes spy sitting precariously perched on the lint catcher of the dryer but...you guessed it...the little black crayon!
Upon removal of the clothes, and with further inspection, I realized that the little black crayon had managed to cause a great deal of damage to the clothes that had had the unfortunate pleasure of its company in the dryer.
I shook my head and thought to myself, "Lord, there's got to be a lesson in this. Please show me what it is because at this time, I'm feeling like the world's worst Domestic Engineer (aka Homemaker) and can't see how these clothes (the majority of which were my husband's good work clothes) can be salvaged.
This morning, while spraying Shout on all of the ugly, black marks on the crayon-damaged pile of clothes I realized the clothes were probably ruined beyond repair and nothing that I could do was likely to make a difference.
Then the Lord spoke.
He showed me that that little black crayon is a lot like sin. Often times there will be sins that are hidden (much like that little black crayon in my pant's pocket) in my heart that altho I may not physically act on them, they are still there and God can see them.
My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from me, nor is their sin concealed from my eyes. Jeremiah 16:17
There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. Luke 12:2
And, much like the little black crayon, a small sin harbored in the heart can cause a great deal of damage. Also like the little black crayon, eventually the condition of sin in my heart will begin to leave visible marks on my life and the lives of my family.
And so, rather than leave the little black crayon in my pocket to eventually reveal its presence in such an ugly way, I should have never put the crayon in my pocket to begin with. It is the same with sin.
The good news is, altho I may never be able to remove the marks made on those clothes by that little black crayon, God's Son is able to remove those ugly black "marks" in my heart! PRAISE THE LORD!
Oh, Lord, search my heart and reveal any hidden sin there so that I might confess it and repent! Remove and replace the hidden sin in my heart with Your Word so that I might not sin against You (Psalm119:11)! Thank you for using the little black crayon to draw me closer to You! AMEN!
