I mentioned to someone on another post that we should pray the scriptures. And instead of begging God to do something He's already done, to speak statements of faith. for example below.

Our Father which art in heaven---Deuteronomy 26:15 Look down from thy holy habitation, from heaven

Hallowed be thy name. ---1 Chronicles 16:10 Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD.

Thy kingdom come--- Luke 11:20 But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.

Thy will be done in earth--- Hebrews 10:9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God.

as it is in heaven--- Luke 11:2 Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

You give us this day our daily bread--- Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

And you forgive us our debts--- Colossians 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

as we forgive our debtors--- Matthew 6:15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Fatherforgive your trespasses.

You lead us not into temptation--- James 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

but YOU deliver us from evil--- 2 Timothy 4:18 And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

For thine is the kingdom--- Luke 22:30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

and the power, and the glory--- 1 Chronicles 29:11 Thine, O LORD is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.

Forever--- Exodus 15:18 The LORD shall reign for ever and ever. (ever= greek aiōn = an unbroken age, perpetuity of time, eternity

Amen (so it is, so be it, may it be fulfilled)

This being so. The Lords Prayer would be a series of statements of faith. Not requests.

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

You give us this day our daily bread.

And you forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

You lead us not into temptation, but you deliver us from evil:

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Psalms 71

1 In You oh Lord do I put my trust. You never let me be put to confusion.

2 You deliver me in your righteousness, and cause me to escape: You incline your ear toward me, and you save me.

3 You are my strong habitation, whereto I may continually resort: You have given commandment to save me; for You are my rock and my fortress.

4 You deliver me, oh my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.

5 For You are my hope, oh my Lord God: You are my trust from my youth.

6 By You have I been held up from the womb: You are he that took me out of my mothers belly. My praise shall be continually of you.

7 I am as a wonder to many; but you are my strong refuge.

8 You let my mouth be filled with praise and with your honor all the day.

9 You will not cast me off in the time of my old age; you do not forsake me when my strength fails.

10 My enemies speak against me; and they that lay in wait for my soul take council together,

11 saying God has forgotten him: persecute and take him ; for there is none to deliver him.

12 Oh God, You are not far from me: You oh God , make haste for my help.

13 You let them be confounded and consumed that are adversaries to my soul; let them be covered with reproach and dishonor that seek my hurt.

14 But I will hope continually, and will yet praise you more and more.

15 My mouth shall show forth your righteousness and your salvation all the day; for I know not the numbers thereof.

16 I will go in the strength of the Lord God: I will make mention of your righteousness, even of yours only. 17 Oh God, You have taught me from my youth: and hitherto I have declared your wondrous works.

18 When I am old and grey headed, oh God, You will not forsake me; until I have shown Your strength unto this generation, and Your power to every one that is to come.

19 Your righteousness also, oh God, is very high, who has done great things: oh God, who is like unto you! 20 You who has shown me great and sore troubles, shall quicken me again, and shall bring me up again from the depths of the earth.

21 You shall increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side.

22 I will also praise You with the psaltery, even your truth, oh my God: unto You will I sing with the harp, oh You Holy One of Israel.

23 My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing to you; and my soul , which You have redeemed.

24 My tongue shall also talk of your righteousness all the day long: for they are confused, for they are brought to shame that seek my hurt.

Your thought is, I believe, a good one. Long ago I settled into a daily prayer life which always includes a chapter from Psalms, Proverbs, Ecc. or Song of Solomon.

Praying what we read in scripture will bring us to truth that we have not yet seen or have seen wrongly. To pray very simply is communicating... usually with God although in older English we might have said something like, "I pray thee that you will assist me."

I think the translators got it wrong in this verse. It should say...

Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God
Eph 6:18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

.I always "pray the Word of God", in that way you never get it wrong.

Its been rattling around in my head too, Amadeus, that we often are a bit wobbly on knowing whether or not something we pray is even God's will. When we pray scripture though......Well we know that we know that we know that it's Gods will. And if we know that it's Gods will, we KNOW that we have that thing that we ask for.

In the OT the people asked for a king and the prophet Samuel immediately rebuked them. Later God told Samuel to give them the king that they desired. It was not the prophet, Samuel, who was being rejected, but effectively they were rejecting it was God Himself. They received a king and as result they had continuous trouble, even in the reigns of their comparatively better kings. We do need to ask of God, but we need to ask what it is that He has for us rather asking for something that we think we need. Our flesh still talks to us. It tells when we should eat meat and potatoes. It tells us when we should put on our winter overcoat. Sometimes it tells us to do things that are out of God's will for us.

If we listen only to our flesh we may miss God. Sometimes it is time to fast rather than to have meat and potatoes. Sometimes it is time to give our winter overcoat to a man do not know. We need to come to the point where are always able to distinguish between His voice and the other voices we are hearing:

"To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.

And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.

And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers." John 10:3-5

Yeah that was the worst thing about getting a man for a king. The people forgot to look to God and looked to a man instead. I guess they for got that a king puts his pants one leg at a time just like everyone else.
