Amos 7:7; Thus He showed me, and behold, the Lord was standing by a vertical wall with a plumb line in His hand.
Amos 7:8; The Lord said to me, “What do you see, Amos?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said,
“Behold I am about to put a plumb line
In the midst of My people Israel.
I will spare them no longer.
Amos 7:9; “The high places of Isaac will be desolated And the sanctuaries of Israel laid waste.
Then I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.”

What's a plumb line? Back in ancient times before we had "levels" and sophisticated computerized tools, builders would just take a string with a rock attached to the end of it.
They just let the rock hang an inch or two above the ground. The line the was attached to, was the plumb line. It was the reference point of what was perfectly vertical.
If the plumb line was a little bit off, the entire structure was off.

I'm an old guy. Maybe not the oldest here on TalkJesus, but I figure I'm towards the upper end. A lot has changed in my life. Things I never thought I would see. Some for the better, some for the worse.

I'm old enough to remember when we could bring Bibles to school, and even pray in school. I was alive when the US sill had only 48 states.
When I was young most men worked and supported their families. Most women stayed home and raised children.
When I was young most parents still spanked their children, even schools did this. I myself was acquainted with the "rod of correction" more than once by a teacher or coach at the school.
Back then children didn't question or talk back to their parents.
There were no Hindu temples in the US in those days, there were no Muslim mosques anywhere to be found here. No one knew what Wicca was.
Communism and socialism were frowned on, men went to war and fought for freedom, even for other countries.
Fornication and adultery were still sins to be shunned, people who did these things weren't allowed to be leaders in the church. Most people who did these things were ashamed to go to church.
I though being a homosexual was mostly a myth. I had heard of such things, but it was never talked about. It certainly wasn't in movies or on television.
There was no internet, pornography was in adult magazines hidden behind the counter where no one could see them.
Gender dysphoria and relative truth weren't even of the horizon. There were no abortion clinics, there was no antifa, and liberalism was discouraged.

Now a days, if a parent spanks a child... it's "child abuse". If a parent tries to teach a child about Judeo-Christian morals, it's propaganda and idealogical abuse.
If a man supports his family and the wife stays home, it's misogyny and gender abuse. If a woman wants to stay home and raise children, she is "a victim of a male dominated society".
Fornication and adultery have become so common and prevalent today, that many churches no longer even ask if people are married. All are accepted because "Go loves us all".
Some churches now openly support Gay and Lesbian relationships, even for leaders in "the church".
Christianity is now called "an antiquated, intolerant religion whose time has passed".

slowly, ever so slowly, bit by bit... we are being brainwashed. We have become more and more accepting of sin.
Children no longer respect parents, parents no longer have time to raise children, careers are more important. So children are being raised by liberal video games, liberal teachers, muslim influences,
and the gay agenda. What is "normal" has shifted, it has moved... slowly, imperceptibly, more and more towards sin and chaos.
Even Christians argue against child discipline and for feminism. Even Christians say we should be more and more tolerant.

I suppose society changes, people change... but my Bible says God never changes. I'm pretty sure he doesn't become more and more tolerant.
I'm pretty sure His plumb line hasn't moved.

It hasnt, its simply comparable to the process of putting a frog in normal room temp water, and then slowly heat it up to boiling. If you tried to put a live frog in boiling water, it would jump out right away. But if you put it in normal temp water and heat it up, the frog wont realize his dilemma until its too late. Little by little, move the markers of whats accepted by society, until its completely corrupted. Even Lenin I believe said that socialism bit by bit will eventually lead to communism. Where as trying to push it on our society even 20 years ago would be unthinkable, now many people think its probably a good thing if the right people are in charge. All that seek power are corruptible and those in charge even if honest to begin with often fall prey to temptation. Our form of government (the US) is better than most, but evil people wish to subvert us to their own ideals where authoritarians rule and do whatever corrupt thing they want without fear of reprisals, and force any behavior on the people or face death.

It is not intelligent to compare two generations as surroundings around us keep on changing. You say women stayed home and raised children. Women today are more independent. We still raise our children. That in itself is a full time job, but we do not have to stay home. We need women as teachers, doctors, pastors, etc… It is common sense!

I do not think it is great that parents in your generation were beating their children, and if you think this does not happen now, then you are wrong. Discipline is not a synonym for spanking. It is not biblical. These ideas are Satanic. It comes from Satan. If you do that, then yeah it is abuse. It does not matter, if it is done now, or 70-80 years ago.

Parents make mistakes. Some parents are arrogant fools. In fact, most of them still need to learn from their little children. Some parents are little babies! Age does not matter much. Nobody is better or smarter, because they got a degree, or because they are much older. We must respect everyone, regardless of their age. I got spanked by my mother on several occasions, and I can tell you the result of her abuse. It is not going well for us. It was her fault, not mine. She probably was abused by her parents and think it is OK, but it is not. Ask Christian therapists, and if they have the Holy Spirit they will tell you how that can mess up your child.

This is a free country, we have American Hindus, American Muslims, and there are Americans who practice Neo-paganism and all kind of religions and spiritualism. Some of them are co-workers or friends. I do not like these religions, but those people have the right to practice whatever they want here. It is constitutional and the founding fathers were deists and some of them were Masons. In other words, they were not saved.

We did not go any war to fight for freedom. That was a big lie. We slaughtered people and bombed the hell out of them. We created terrorist groups and supported them in the past. If you do not know that already, then I am not sure what planet you came from.

Why should we feel ashamed to go to church after sinning? I do not understand. None of us are without sin. God asks for perfection. He does not see adultery more sinful than being heartless. These Churches are built for sinners who need God. Jesus was eating with tax collectors and sinners. He is God and he did that! Was Jesus ashamed of it? Should he?

I heard about a Baptist pastor some years ago who publicly said homosexuals should be put to death. He got what he deserved, and was banned from entering many countries, but is that what you want? I was only dating women before. I was married to a Christian woman, but now I’m in a heterosexual relationship, have a child, and I believe homosexuality is a sin, repented of it, and still some Christians think I should not marry my current partner. Let’s talk about having justice and mercy, because you are not 'allowing' me to live a holy life at all. Besides, your generation seems to think of being gay as a taboo topic comes from insecurities and lack of knowledge.

We discussed these matters in our schools with our teachers. They allowed us to write papers and tell what we think. Some agreed and others did not. Your generation did not even leave a 'safe' space to discuss these things. I did not choose my sexuality, but I was born with it. It is people like you who say these things who makes my God looks horrible. So, take it with God. The bible asks me to not act on it, and that is what I’m doing, but I’m not going to deny who I am. I’m also not homosexual. A lot of people forget about those like me who are attracted to both genders. I rebelled against God, because I felt rejected by everyone around me. We are a persecuted minority. It is only now that we started to gain few human rights. In a lot of places, we can face a death sentence. Even in America today, there are a lot of crimes against the LGBTQ people. I can show you endless cases. I often keep an eye on these cases. Yet, you here seem very disappointed that you hear about Gay and Lesbian relationships, and you even called it an agenda. I am praying for you as a lot of your brothers and sisters are gay/lesbian/bi or a trans. You seem to think people in your generation have better morals. When did it become legal for black and white to marry in this country? Let me know. No generation is better, or smarter. If we go back enough, there were no violent video games, but there were Catholic and protestants slaughtering each others for heresies.

God bless,

You can make the bible say whatever you want. The entire message of Christianity says it is not OK

I used the same bible that you're reading to tell others how gay relationships are not sinful in the past. I even trained my ex. I can also win debates, but that is not the point. God warns us about people adding to the word of God. The entire message of Christianity says it is not OK to beat children. We are told to obey the laws of the land in the bible. or that only applies when you tell others how drugs are not OK?

I believe in the power of prayers. It is more effective than any human's hand, because that is asking God for a gentle touch. If you beat your children, then expect your children to beat other kids because they will think it is OK. We have seen this many times.

Parents who dont discipline their children when they do wrong are teaching them its okay to do wrong, and those parents will one day grieve when their son or daughter ends up in prison, dead from overdoses or suicided, and then wonder where it all went wrong.

God bless,
Hi KittyLinda. I just wanted to say that not all the changes we are experiencing in our generation are good. I am not condemning all of them. Obviously there are good things too, but as the Bible says, things are going to become worse with time.
"And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold." Matthew 24:12
"Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many." Matthew 24:5
As we see here in these verses and we see around us, things are not getting better.
Me and you know only this present generation, but older people have seen more and can compare how things have changed. Evil is been always there, but in these present times, it just seems as there is more of it.
God is patient, but His patience is having limits too. We obviously need to change as the world around us changes and we need somehow to adapt to things, but only with the purpose to reach out others for the gospel.
In our personal life we need to hold on to the message of Jesus, no matter what.
God bless

We do not need prisons for those doing drugs. Nobody can order me what I can swallow or drink. I own this body. That is another topic to discuss.

. . . but we may need prisons for those who beat children or abuse them in any way or shape.

Discipline means spanking ? Could you imagine Jesus beating a 9 or 8 years old child?

Also, the OP seems to talk more about cultural gaps. You can't spell culture without spelling 'cult.' first. There is no older cult that is much better than the one that comes after it.

Anyone who beats their children, and leaves them in pain does not deserve any respect and when they try to make this biblical, they sound like someone swallowing their own vomit.

Proverbs is outdated. It is was not even written for me. No need for a bible or word of God to know common sense!

Do you need the word of God to know that stealing is evil, and you should not steal unless you are starving to death and had to do it just to live? NO. Even a bloody atheist knows that.

Ephesians 6:5-8: Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.

One may also argue that owning slaves is biblical, so let's just do it!

We all know why they beat their children, because some of those 'elderly' are psychopaths who also had psychopathic parents.

Dear brother. I'm not arguing this generation is better or worse. I'm just showing how the OP failed badly to show it. I do not know what is so good about feeling ashamed about going to church after sinning. It is nonsense, and especially that part about homosexuals. I wonder what will they do when they get a gay or bisexual children. Because I had my own abuse for just being born this way. Agenda? I do not think it is.

You worship a different God, one that aligns with the current views on the world. Many atheists will agree with you, that morality should not come from scripture, that people should be free of any bonds of discipline and learn their own discipline (or not) with time. I have a nephew and his wife who raised their kids that way, let them do what they want with little punishment. I have no doubt you would agree with his raising. He spent most of their childhood in the military, barely knowing his children while his wife did a poor job of raising them. Eventually, his wife found another lover, rarely spent time with her kids, they seperated when their daughter found out, and was both angry at her mom, and yet wanted to be like her mom. To be desired by others, thats love to her, its what she has learned. Their son, was a bit more spiritual, wanted his mom to love him, but rarely was able to please her, didnt want to believe his mom would cheat on his dad. Now dad is out of military but working as a civilian contractor with the military, at home, spending more time with his kids. Thats good at least. The son, still wants to stay with his dad, and has realized finally that his mom is just someone who is nice to him sometimes. He is very introverted, from years of lack proper raising. Despite this, he still wants to do the right thing, just not sure what the right thing is, and his dad is either agnostic or an atheist, he isnt sure. So with the impressions our parents leave us, he is not so sure that the bible I gave him (that he once held as a dearly beloved gift, is now just something special in some way from the uncle he likes) really has the truth he is seeking for in life. He likes trains, and computers, and graphics on computers. But he rarely is able to make friends for his shyness and difference from most kids his age. I love both the children, but the lack of both love in time spent with their parents and lack of discipline has left them both unsure of whats truly good or bad. I can easily see that you see any punishment like spanking as evil, willing to unburden yourself with scripture that tells you otherwise. Any physical punishment done in love for the sake of the child is a greater love than letting them have their way. You should never spank a child when angry, and the child always needs to know they are loved regardless of the bad things they do, that is the proper way. If you wish to follow the ways of the world, you will one day regret it. I will say no more on it. That was your only warning. Now if you like, you can slander me all you wish, I will not respond anymore on the subject with you.

Even though you disagree with the OP, I think you've proved the point quite nicely here.

Thank you.

Back to the original post about the plumb line,

It reminds me of an article I wrote a long time ago titled "Is it me or is it getting hot in here".

In the article I start with the saying, "how do you boil a frog?" The answer is very slowly. You slowly
turn up the heat until it is too late.

In the article I talked about how society keeps changes our standards. Obviously there are some changes
which are progress. Such as doing away with slavery and awareness for violence against women, etc.
That is progress.

However, most everything else I must say seems to be the world going to hell in a hand basket.

To put it real simple. Real simple. If you are a Christian, I don't see how you can read the Bible and not
understand that Jesus clearly teaches that in the last days things will get worst. The Bible clearly, teaches
that in the last day things will get worst.

So respectfully speaking and in love, if someone finds themselves in love with all that the world is doing, and
believing that all of the movements happening in the world is good and everything is going well, one must ask
themselves, are things actually getting better, and if they are, what did Jesus mean that things would get worst?
Or might some of us be deceived into seeing all that is happening in a distorted perspective thereby calling evil good?

Food for thought.
