The Music/ Mood Test

Hey everyone,

So, after a very flawed argument I had to apologize for on a previous thread on Christian Metal I decided to run a study on myself and see how different types of music effect my spirit and my emotions.

I found that in my test my spirit soared when listening to worship music and it feels like God is "closer than my skin" as is said in David Crowder's song Obsession. I consistently listened to only worship music for a few days and my spirit grew to such a full... fullness that I saw it overflow onto our youth worship band (which I play drums in). We were booked to play for a local Apostolic conference here in Tulsa and man... it was the best service we had ever played. Not saying it was all "because of me", because its never that way, but I was personally able to enter right into worship on the first song instead of being delayed until the 3rd or 4th song. Which made for a much smoother service and a binding between all of us all while playing to where no one really even got off at all the whole service. Usually on drums I feel one step withheld from entering in because I am so focused on not "screwing up", but with my spirit in the place it was... bam I was in full out worship, raised hands and everything (in the parts I could). I also found that I am generally in a better mood all the time when listening to worship music.

I then went and listened to some of my christian metal songs... etc.. and though I personally still enjoy them, I did not see my spirit jump to the same effect. They didn't seem to bring me down, but they didn't seem to lift me up either. It was kinda like my spirit was saying "seriously, okay ill shut off for a while till your done."

Then I did the all out worst thing ever... I pulled up some old secular metal/hard rock songs I used to listen too... Instant depletion... I noticed I was having a hard time even connecting with God in prayer. I had a feeling back when I was living in full out sin that I like to call "numbness". My spirit didn't just wait till I was done listening... but it full up felt like it went on vacation... and it took effort to get it to come back home.

So what I have found in myself is that music really does matter. It doesn't only effect my emotional state, but my relationship with the Father.

Therefore I'd like to challenge anyone and everyone here, search your hearts and test out what is truly pleasing to God in YOUR own heart. Don't only look for what doesn't hurt you... but look at what progresses you. Because honestly for me, if I'm not progressing, I'm falling... there is no in between.

So, try it out... and if you like what you find or don't like what you find and feel like sharing, reply! I'm interested to see if this is a universal truth or something personal to me.
