Has anyone else ever wondered what God will reveal the new name of His people to be? Because it isn't Jerusalem or Israel anymore. (Please don't take that the wrong way, I'm not boasting against the roots.) But I am saying that God in His Word has declared a new name that we will know Him by and that we will also be called after. (I'll get to the Scripture references in a moment.)
Paul has alluded to this many times in his writings. "Not all who are Israel are Israel." "He is a Jew who is one inwardly." It seems to me that being redeemed we also need a new name, and I believe the Bible says this. Israel has also been redeemed and that seems it would call for the same. It is true that the Bible in the New Testament still calls Israel Israel, and indeed they still were. But who will keep the name Israel (which name itself has prophetic meaning of things to come and not the final indication of them those according to the flesh or those of faith?
I consider my self an Israelite by faith, but my citizenship is in heaven and not according to the flesh or earthly powers. To be an Israelite means you are God's chosen people, which is actually a seed of faith. Israel was a name God gave Jacob and then called His people according to. But I believe the new kingdom of which we are a part will be called by the very name of God Himself. As a nation and a people and a language seem to bear the same name (The Japanese in Japan speak Japanese; the French in France speak French; etc.) so also those of us in Christ who speak His language bear His name.
Revelation 3:12 says, "Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem (this doesn't mean it will actually be called "Jerusalem") which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name."
Revelation 2:17 also says, "He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it."
In Revelation 19:12-13, "His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called the word of God." And in Revelation 19:16, "And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS."
Peter also tells us, "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy (Pet. 2:9-10.)"
Israel was already a people, but Peter says we are a new people which before there was not. When will we see the borders of this nation established and how shall we know it's name? Will it be by warring and shedding blood that we establish our domain? I should hardly think so, but yet it shall come to pass just the same.
Before the coming of Christ it seemed our God would only hint at who He was, and then the symbolic meaning of those revelations were fulfilled in Christ. I think so also should be His name that we receive from Him: while the former names hinted at who He was it will now be revealed in power and in truth.
And there are many more references to our position as citizens of God's kingdom which is to come, the new Israel, if you will. Feel free to chime in anyone with more verses.
