I have been writing a poem on the subject of depression/suicidal thoughts, as I went through such thoughts many years ago, but give thanks to God in His loving tender care in gradually leading me to purpose in life, trust this may be encouragement to others confused and same mind of thought.

The Point of Life?

It really is so very sad
when the figures that one hears
of those amongst the young
that takes their life amidst many fears

But it's not restricted to youth
for many older end their days
wishing not to live any more
is life really such a haze?

It was indeed many years ago
when life seemed such a waste
feeling that there was no purpose
in living among the human race

What was the point I said
for no word can I communicate
my tongue was continually in fear
I really was an awful state

Now I can look back with thanks
to God's providential care
slowly bringing me out of the mire
promising for me to be always there

to God's providential care
slowly bringing me out of the mire
promising for me to be always there

Yes, the Lord is always with us through the storms of life
Always abundantly ready and able to save the lost
Always there to lift up His children out of the miry clay

I waited patiently for the LORD; and He inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
And He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God:
Psalm 40:1-3

In a sermon, Billy Graham described Hell as an unpleasant place. He didn't say much else about it because the Bible does not dwell on it. Put another way, there is no silver lining, no sunrise to end the night, no hope that tomorrow will be a better day; nothing changes for the better, and the future is no different than today.

Many people tend to view life in that same manner and I can't say that I blame them, especially those who abide in harsh repression be it social or medical. For them, there is no hope for a better tomorrow. For some, the only relief is the inevitable grave. Suicide is an act whose only intended outcome is death. In most cases, it is about the victim such as a self-inflicted drug overdose, death by firearms, jumping from high places. Other acts can be considered suicidal such as the recent high-wire act of Nikolas Wallenda. Another form of suicide would be preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to Muslim hard-liners in the streets of Baghdad. One would have to be completely confident or completely crazy to do such a thing.

For those who choose to end their life by suicide, they abide in the hope that Death will end their suffering and there is nothing beyond the grave save more nothingness. Scientists cannot prove one way or the other if there is another side which is better or worse. Listening to others talk about seeing the other side is not convincing either. I have encountered two people who both claim to be Christian. Their personalities seem to be more about them than Jesus.

Preaching the gospel of Jesus is suicidal in many places on the planet. It's true that the Bible is one of the most travelled book in the universe. It has been carried to the moon and read while orbiting it.. There are many books which promise a better life by developing a faith in ourselves or someone else either in this life or the next. Astronomy has taught us that the Universe is a big place. Despite our technological achievements, we can see only a part of it. On the Earth and thanks to that same technology, we find life in places we thought not possible for anything to live. Yet, there is life. Paul wrote our best view of life is as looking through a dark glass. Thus, we only see a glimpse of a much bigger picture.

Hope. Phrasing it this way, Jesus was the only prophet who not only promised a better future, but was willing to die for that promise. I will give you rest, peace, a sound mind, life eternal ... things that people in trouble desperately need in addition to a solution. We have the choice or option to refuse. If we refuse, are we not also denying ourselves any blessings as well? Are we really that blind or naive to think we can have it both ways? When the end comes, is your faith rooted in the hope that things will get better? Besides a book, what evidence do you have?

People at the end of their rope may be looking for someone to catch them when they let go. What can you offer to restore their faith that someone will not only catch them, but put them back on their feet to run again?

Cheers,
John
Phil 4:8

A beautiful poem and a beautiful testimony. Thank you for sharing. After reading this a song came to mind lifting up the Lord. Jesus as Savior, Emmanuel, Messiah. He surely never will leave us or forsake us. In Whom we can put all our trust.

I always love a good poem. and yes it is so true and unfortunate. Praying for God to stay with them always, show them there will be a better tomorrow here with the Lord
