even though I have received such wonderful revelations from God. So to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud. Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, "My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness." So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. 2 Corinthians 12:7-8 NLT
One of the great mysteries in the Bible is the apostle Paul’s “thorn in the flesh,” which he also called “a messenger from Satan to torment me.” It’s not certain whether this thorn was a physical issue, a spiritual enemy, an emotional affliction—or something else. Whatever it was, Paul acknowledged that God was it to “keep me from becoming proud.”
Paul’s response to his “thorn” was perfect. He didn’t complain—he simply asked God to remove it but submitted himself to the Lord’s will. God didn’t remove the thorn, and in the end, Paul could boast in his weaknesses and acknowledge that it allowed the power of Jesus to work through him.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, when I pray for relief but You allow my “thorn in the flesh”—be it a physical problem, spiritual opposition, or other issues—remind me that You have a purpose for all things and that Your grace is sufficient for me and that You work best through my weaknesses.
