The Wages of Sin is Death

Probably since 2017 the Lord Jesus has been having me use Bible Gateway and their “Verse of the Day” passage of Scripture as the passage that I am to study and to write on each day, only usually extending to the whole chapter and/or beyond, but not the whole chapter in one writing, but divided up among several writings. But not always. And still sometimes he will have me cover an entire book of the Bible (not necessarily every word), which is where he had me from 2004 to 2017, I believe, as best as I recall.

Well, the verse of the day for today is Romans 6:23 (NASB’95):

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

And this is a passage of Scripture that is often included in gospel tracts, separate from its biblical context, and interpreted to say what it does not teach if it is taught in its appropriate context. So I am going to hit the highlights of the context of this one verse in this writing, so that we get the context of what it is really saying, and then in other writings I will go through the verses more thoroughly.

“For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin.” (Romans 6:5-7)

“Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts.. Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?” (Romans 6:12,16)

“For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. Therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is death. But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:20-23)

Summary of Romans 6

When we believe in Jesus Christ with God-gifted and God-persuaded faith in the Lord Jesus, our old self is crucified with Christ in death to sin, and we are raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer as slaves to sin, but as slaves to God and to his righteousness. So we are to consider ourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore, we are not to let sin reign any longer in our mortal bodies so that we obey its lusts, for sin shall no longer have mastery (control) over our lives.

So we need to understand that when we present ourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, that we are slaves of the one whom we obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life with God. But when we are slaves of sin, to impurity and to lawlessness, we are free in regard to righteousness, i.e. righteousness is not a part of our lives, and the benefit that we gain from that is death, not life eternal with God in heaven.

But now, if genuinely we have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, it results in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. In other words, if sin is still what we practice, and not obedience to God and to his New Covenant commands, it will result in death for us, not in eternal life with God. But if death to sin and walks of obedience to God is what we practice, its end is eternal life in Christ Jesus, which is gifted to us by God.

Oh, to Be Like Thee, Blessed Redeemer

Lyrics by Thomas O. Chisholm, 1897
Music by W. J. Kirkpatrick, 1897

Oh, to be like Thee! blessèd Redeemer,
This is my constant longing and prayer;
Gladly I’ll forfeit all of earth’s treasures,
Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear.

Oh, to be like Thee! full of compassion,
Loving, forgiving, tender and kind,
Helping the helpless, cheering the fainting,
Seeking the wandering sinner to find.

O to be like Thee! lowly in spirit,
Holy and harmless, patient and brave;
Meekly enduring cruel reproaches,
Willing to suffer others to save.

O to be like Thee! while I am pleading,
Pour out Thy Spirit, fill with Thy love;
Make me a temple meet for Thy dwelling,
Fit me for life and Heaven above.

Oh, to be like Thee! Oh, to be like Thee,
Blessèd Redeemer, pure as Thou art;
Come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy fullness;
Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.
