Wrath of God

We see sometimes in the OT, that God caused some people to perish.
Exo 14:23 Then the Egyptians took up the pursuit, and all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots and his horsemen went in after them into the midst of the sea.
Exo 14:24 At the morning watch, the LORD looked down on the army of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and cloud and brought the army of the
Egyptians into confusion.
Exo 14:25 He caused their chariot wheels to swerve, and He made them drive with difficulty; so the Egyptians said, "Let us flee from Israel, for the LORD
is fighting for them against the Egyptians."
Exo 14:26 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may come back over the Egyptians, over their chariots and
their horsemen."
Exo 14:27 So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its normal state at daybreak, while the Egyptians were fleeing right into
it; then the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.
Exo 14:28 The waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen, even Pharaoh's entire army that had gone into the sea after them; not even one of
them remained.
Exo 14:29 But the sons of Israel walked on dry land through the midst of the sea, and the waters were like a wall to them on their right hand and on their
left.
Exo 14:30 Thus the LORD saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.

Num 25:1 While Israel remained at Shittim, the people began to play the harlot with the daughters of Moab.
Num 25:2 For they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.
Num 25:3 So Israel joined themselves to Baal of Peor, and the LORD was angry against Israel.
Num 25:4 The LORD said to Moses, "Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight before the LORD, so that the fierce anger of
the LORD may turn away
from Israel."
Num 25:5 So Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Each of you slay his men who have joined themselves to Baal of Peor."
Num 25:6 Then behold, one of the sons of Israel came and brought to his relatives a Midianite woman, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the
congregation of the sons of Israel, while they were weeping at the doorway of the tent of meeting.
Num 25:7 When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he arose from the midst of the congregation and took a spear in his hand,
Num 25:8 and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and pierced both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman, through the body. So the
plague on the sons of Israel
was checked.
Num 25:9 Those who died by the plague were 24,000.
Num 25:10 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
Num 25:11 "Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned away My wrath from the sons of Israel in that he was jealous with My
jealousy among them, so that I did not destroy the sons of Israel in My jealousy.

It may be, that if Phinehas wouldn't have killed the couple above (verse 8) God might have kept on wiping out the Israelite s.

Gen 6:13 Then God said to Noah, "The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to
destroy them
with the earth.
Gen 6:17 "Behold, I, even I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life, from under heaven;
everything that is on the earth shall perish.
Gen 7:21 All flesh that moved on the earth perished, birds and cattle and beasts and every swarming thing that swarms upon the earth, and all mankind;
Gen 7:22 of all that was on the dry land, all in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, died.
Gen 7:23 Thus He blotted out every living thing that was upon the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky, and they
were blotted out from the earth; and only Noah was left, together with those that were with him in the ark.

Now God said he would never destroy humankind by way of a flood again, but what about other ways?

Gen 19:24 Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven,
Gen 19:25 and He overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.
Gen 19:26 But his wife, from behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
Gen 19:27 Now Abraham arose early in the morning and went to the place where he had stood before the LORD;
Gen 19:28 and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the valley, and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the land ascended
like the smoke of a furnace
.
Gen 19:29 Thus it came about, when God destroyed the cities of the valley, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow,
when He overthrew the cities in which Lot lived.

Jude 1:7 just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.

Once again God destroys a large number of evil people. So, OK, those stories are all in the Old Testament, what about the New testament?

Act 5:1 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property,
Act 5:2 and kept back some of the price for himself, with his wife's full knowledge, and bringing a portion of it, he laid it at the apostles' feet.
Act 5:3 But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back some of the price of the land?
Act 5:4 "While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived
this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God."
Act 5:5 And as he heard these words, Ananias fell down and breathed his last; and great fear came over all who heard of it.
Act 5:6 The young men got up and covered him up, and after carrying him out, they buried him.
Act 5:7 Now there elapsed an interval of about three hours, and his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
Act 5:8 And Peter responded to her, "Tell me whether you sold the land for such and such a price?" And she said, "Yes, that was the price."
Act 5:9 Then Peter said to her, "Why is it that you have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who have
buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out as well."
Act 5:10 And immediately she fell at his feet and breathed her last, and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her
beside her husband.
Act 5:11 And great fear came over the whole church, and over all who heard of these things.

I bring this up because from time to time there seems to be a movement that says "God is love", "God loves us all", "There is no hell", "There is no eternal punishment".
This is a half truth. God is love. But that isn't all he is. He is a jealous, Holy and Just God. He punishes those who deserve it.

Luk 13:23 And someone said to Him, "Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?" And He said to them,
Luk 13:24 "Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.
Luk 13:25 "Once the head of the house gets up and shuts the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door, saying, 'Lord, open up to us!'
then He will answer and say to you, 'I do not know where you are from.'
Luk 13:26 "Then you will begin to say, 'We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets';
Luk 13:27 and He will say, 'I tell you, I do not know where you are from; DEPART FROM ME, ALL YOU EVILDOERS.'
Luk 13:28 "In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God,
but yourselves being thrown out.

Even Jesus displayed righteous anger and wrath on a few occasions.

Mat 23:33 "You serpents, you brood of vipers, how will you escape the sentence of hell?
Mat 12:34 "You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.

Joh 2:15 And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money
changers and overturned their tables;
Joh 2:16 and to those who were selling the doves He said, "Take these things away; stop making My Father's house a place of business."
Joh 2:17 His disciples remembered that it was written, "ZEAL FOR YOUR HOUSE WILL CONSUME ME."

Many say that God forgives everyone and everything. Again, a half truth. Many take John 3:16 an say that "God so loved the World" and they stop there, saying
the whole world is covered, but the second part of that verse says "Whosoever believes on him (Jesus)" and many people leave that part out. Or else they say, "I believe in God", well that's great, the demons believe also and shudder. But do you believe in Jesus Christ?

Mat 25:32 "All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats;
Mat 25:33 and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left.
Mat 25:34 "Then the King will say to those on His right, 'Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation
of the world.
Mat 25:41 "Then He will also say to those on His left, 'Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and
his angels;
Mat 25:46 "These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

Some say "Well just I can't believe a loving God would do something like that".

Exo 32:33 The LORD said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book.
Exo 32:34 "But go now, lead the people where I told you. Behold, My angel shall go before you; nevertheless in the day when I punish, I will punish them
for their sin."
Exo 32:35 Then the LORD smote the people, because of what they did with the calf which Aaron had made.

Yes God is love, his mercies are new every morning, he forgives us, he loves us, all of that is true.
But the Lord will judge those who don't believe in his son, and the destiny for them is not pleasant.

Rev 20:15 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

There's only one way to get your name in the book, if your not sure your name is in it, it might be a good time to do something about it.

Heb 10:31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Mat 10:28 "Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

While fear is a great motivator we know by scripture and experience that God does not employ it to motivate us. Jesus said that when He was lifted up He would draw all men to Himself, and draw is the key word here. Is wrath useful in drawing one closer, does one usually run towards something fearful,? Doubtful, I think some simple logic should be used here in your discussion BAC.

31 What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?32 Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?33 Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself.34 Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.
35 Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?36 (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.” )37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:31-39 (NLT)

Seems maybe you under estimate the power of God's love.

Here's another scripture to encourage everyone to draw closer to God and discover His character through experience.

14 When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, 15 the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. 16 I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit.17 Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.18 And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
20 Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.21 Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.
Eph 3:14-21 (NLT)

Just one more scripture.

11 Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other.12 No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us.
13 And God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us.14 Furthermore, we have seen with our own eyes and now testify that the Father sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.15 All who confess that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God.16 We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love.

God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.17 And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world.
18 Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.
1 John 4:11-18 (NLT)

While some may focus on the few moments where God was angry, I think time is better spent focusing on enjoying God's wonderful love.

Great verses!!! I agree with all of them, but I notice they are all written to/for believers.
This thread wasn't really written with believers in mind.

If someone doesn't yet know Jesus, God loves them too!! But if never do get to know him, there is a price.
Some can take this as a "fire and brimstone message" to put the fear of God in people's hearts. Some people do get saved this way.
Still, the fact of the matter is, there is a hell, there is a lake of fire, and God is definitely going to send some people there.
Some churches don't preach this anymore, it's an unpopular message and no one wants to hear it. That doesn't make it any less true.

Sometimes people who come to Jesus this way picture a strict, vengeful God. This isn't the case at all for his children.
Oh, he punishes us from time to time in small usually gentle correcting ways. (Not always so gentle). But we don't have to worry
about eternal damnation and hell fire. We can call him Abba (Daddy God) and come to his throne with boldness.

But for those who reject Jesus....

It's very true the 'wrath of God' is not a popular topic, but Jesus is on record as emphasizing that, and the reality of hell, and the lake of fire into which hell and it's citizens will be thrown. His wrath has in fact been exercised all along among men, yet we know God has also loved His man creation in Old Testament days so much that He gave His Son Jesus to the world of men. That same love has continued on into our time.

God's wrath has been demonstrated in some ways that trouble some folks. One is mentioned, but not specifically described in 2 Thes. 2:[11] And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: [12] That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

There is a perfect example of a specific way God has already done that in 1 Kings 22:[19] And he said, Hear thou therefore the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left.
[20] And the Lord said, Who shall persuade Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead? And one said on this manner, and another said on that manner.
[21] And there came forth a spirit, and stood before the Lord, and said, I will persuade him.
[22] And the Lord said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt persuade him, and prevail also: go forth, and do so.
[23] Now therefore, behold, the Lord hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and the Lord hath spoken evil concerning thee.

Shocking? Believe it or not, from God's throne has come and will again come such things upon people determined to rebel against God.

The wimpy king of Judah in that account lived, but the Northern Kingdom (Israel) king died as was fitting. What a terrible price both of them paid for tolerating lying prophets in their ears.

I wonder if this might have been Satan.
Even though he doesn't "have a membership" there anymore, it seems he is allowed to visit from time to time.

Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them.
Job 1:7 The LORD said to Satan, "From where do you come?" Then Satan answered the LORD and said, "From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it."

Job 2:1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the LORD.
Job 2:2 The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Then Satan answered the LORD and said, "From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it."

Jas 1:13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.

Note: before anyone gets the idea that Satan is equal with Jesus, notice it says "sons" with a lower case s. These are created beings.
When the Bible talks about Jesus, it says the "Son of God", upper case S. He is begotten, he always existed.

We know the scriptures say Satan is the accuser of the brethren, father of rebels against truth, while Jesus is our Great High Priest, our Intercessor before the Father. My understanding at present is that each rebel against God is allowing at least one demon, possibly Satan himself, to speak for them at such meeting before God. By the order set by God one can have charge over 100, and one over 1,000, etc. One demon could have charge over a host of lesser demons. When the higher spirit with closest access to the Throne of God has been given power to lie, all under it's charge are authorized to speak the same lie. That enables the host of demons to put the words of lies into the mouths of many false prophets. That is entirely my own conclusion drawn from that former post, not necessarily supported directly by Jesus or the apostles. It's more like taking part in that same vision of Micaiah's, no doubt recorded in the Heavenly Post archived headlines. That explains for me why some folks behave very badly.
