WHEN JESUS COMES

Words by Oswald Smith (1890-1979)
The great missionary Dr. Oswald Smith, spent 1915-1917 as a missionary to the West Coast Canadian Indians. He travelled to the villages by packboat. Oswald's faith was simple: Knowing Jesus personally. Secondly, He knew Jesus brought deliverance and divine healing He saw the despair, the disease, the alcoholism that was destroying the native people. He was particularly shaken by the anguish and lack of hope at a traditional Native funeral for a young child. The image haunted him, and he wrote a hymn depicting the change that took place in the lives of men when Jesus came:

"Then Jesus Came"

One sat alone beside the highway begging,
His eyes were blind, the light he could not see.
He clutched his rags and shivered in the shadows
Then Jesus came and bade his darkness flee.

When Jesus comes, the tempter's power is broken;
When Jesus comes, the tears are wiped away,
He takes the gloom and fills the life with glory,
For all is changed when Jesus comes to stay.

From home and friends the evil spirits drove him,
Among the tombs he dwelt in misery;
He cut himself as demon powers possessed him,
Then Jesus came and set the captive free.

"Unclean, unclean!" the leper cried in torment,
The deaf, the dumb, in helplessness stood near;
The fever raged, disease had gripped its' victim,
Then Jesus came and cast out every fear.

Their hearts were sad as in the tomb they laid him,
For death had come and taken him away;
Their night was dark and bitter tears were falling,
Then Jesus came and night was turned to day.

So men today have found the Savior able,
They could not conquer passion, lust and sin;
Their broken hearts had left them sad and lonely,
Then Jesus came and dwelt, Himself, within.

I woke up this morning with this song playing on my mind, which wouldnt be strange, except I hadnt heard or thought of this song in years. I asked God to allow me to understand what His Spirit is saying, and this is a word from the Lord.

Jesus has come. He has come to set you free, and you would not allow Him to.
His power has not changed. You have stood at a distance, and cried out to Him, and wondered why He hasnt answered. You have asked others to pray, and nothing has changed. It is because you will not come to Him. You have leaned towards Him, but you will not bow before Him, and this is the only way you will ever see His mighty power displayed in your life. You are tossed to and fro in your mind, you look everywhere for help for your suffering and torment, but you will not do this ONE thing - bow before the ONE who has the answer to your need, if you would only believe. Many of you will say you have believed, but with a multitude of faithless words and deeds, you have denied my power. I am the Lord your God, and I have come to show you my salvation, if you will only believe. Will you believe? Do not call me Lord, if you will not believe and do what I say.

I pray for those reading this, that you will turn to God right where you are, and be delivered by the mighty power of Jesus Christ! All glory to His name!
