Hi, I wondered if anyone knows about the biblical arguments for and against theophostic prayer?

I contacted an intercessor because periodically i have trouble with my thoughts and voices, and without realising it have become involved in theophostic prayer. (I've only had one session though).

From what I can tell it is about exposing lies that we have believed in our thinking.

Thanks,

Rachel

Hi Sister Rachel.....

I had to look in the dictionary for the word theophostic........and I could not find it. But my dictionary is falling apart, I have used it for so many years. So do not be discouraged about that.

You say that you contacted "an intercesser" and this gives me concern as to what this is about.

Reading the bible it teaches me/us that Jesus alone is the Saving intercessor..... Heb 7:25. Jesus arose from the dead and is alive today as our Saviour, to help us to overcome every tormenting situation. John 14: 6.

You have trouble with "thoughts and voices" at times......you can be rid of these things immediately, and have a wonderful peace......the peace which only God can give, which is a peace that lasts.

Jesus said John 14:27. The bible says Rom.5:1 etc.

Be encouraged you can know freedom.......in Jesus

Send me a message if I can be of further help

From what I've read in articles posted on different websites, and my understanding of this practice, is that theopostic ministry seems to be about pulling up repressed memories. It sort of reminds me of hypnotism.

There were a couple of sites that referred to this practice as New Age.

I'm sorry, I don't really understand much of what is said about this. Though your words on God giving us peace and knowing freedom in Jesus, hits the nail right on the head. But if you want to learn a wee bit more, I just did a Google search of "theopostic".

Theophostic ministry is defined as bringing God’s (Theo) light (phostic) to areas of our lives that are still in the darkness of wounds, lies, and misbeliefs.

In the counseling setting, the Lord is invited to take us to places in our memories where there is unhealed or unresolved pain. Jesus then helps us to see what lies we may still be believing as the “truth” about ourselves and the circumstances. Among common beliefs we hold as “truths” are: “I was a bad girl”, “Nobody cares”, “I can never change”, “God doesn’t love me”.

Jesus shows us something or speaks a word to help us come into true healing and release. He reassures us He is there and has always been with us. He will not change our history, but He opens our understanding to see and hear Truth.

Theophostic is not just an intellectual discussion of our pain, it is letting down our defenses against the pain, bringing the Lord into our woundedness, allowing Him to comfort us, and helping us come to a place of seeing the circumstances in a new and truthful way. He may speak such truth as “It wasn’t your fault”, “You didn’t make her do that”, “You were just a child”, “You didn’t know.”

True healing comes when our wounds are no longer triggering us back to places of pain that cause us to behave in unhealthy ways in the present. Without healing of past wounds, we tend to perpetuate the very thing we try to escape: repeating and experiencing the pain of the past.

The Lord Jesus desires to heal us and set us free from emotional injury. Theophostic Ministry is a powerful avenue to experience this healing.

The primary theory behind theophostic counseling is that many issues that require counseling, such as depression and anger, are based on falsehoods that a person believes based on comments made about them by others, based on errant teachings, and from bad experiences in his/her life. The goal of theophostic counseling is to lead a person to Jesus for healing and allow Him to reveal the truth to the suffering person. Examples of this would be a young man who believes he was at fault for his parents’ divorce, or a woman who experiences constant shame as a result of a sexual act she feels God will not forgive her of. Theophostic counseling seeks to reveal the lies and expose them to the truth – that we are not responsible for the sinful actions of others and that God can and will forgive us and cleanse us of all of our sins.

Many people do believe lies about painful events in their lives. These lies can cause pain, depression, and unbiblical beliefs about God, forgiveness, and salvation. Exposing these lies to truth of God’s Word and the love and grace of Jesus will bring spiritual and emotional healing.

Thanks for your reply Stephen - I've just sent you a pm.

Dear MelechYisrael,

Thanks for finding out the information about theophostic prayer. I am having reservations about it already, but I was having a bad time and the intercessor I contacted seemed really helpful.

God bless,

Rachel

I had to do some reading and still have only scratched the surface. In my opinion it seems to have some good points and some bad. Views on it seem to vary wildly amongst different groups. Do not consider this to be a condemantion nor an endorsement of Theophastic counseling.

From Wikipedia:
Theophostic Counseling was developed in the United States during the mid-1990s by Dr. Ed Smith, a Baptist Minister. After concerns about legal liabilities associated with offering counseling services, he later changed the name to Theophostic Prayer Ministry.
Its name comes from the Greek theo (God) and phostic (light), and it is often associated with the Christian Inner Healing Movement. Quite specific claims are made for the approach, and Smith says people are being delivered from phobias, depressions, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, dissociative personality disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, sexual addictions, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders, and homosexuality through Theophostic principles.

Some points of contention seem to be these:

From the Grace Church web site-
At its core, the difference between Theophostic Theology and Evangelical Theology is the view of sin. In basic terms Theophostic Theology sees sin as the result of lies that have been believed leading to defective thinking and ultimately manifesting as sin. Evangelical Theology sees sin as the product of our fallen natures and corrupt flesh. Clearly these two views are polar opposites and as always we must search the Scriptures for the truth.

On pages 224-225 of his book “Beyond Tolerable Recovery”, Dr. Ed Smith says that “I have come to believe that there is a fundamental misconception about the root of sinful behavior (in the true Christian) and the reasons that many people struggle with sin throughout their Christian lives. The fundamental misconception I am describing is what I call sin-based theology. Sin based theology believes that the root of my problem is sin. It says, ‘Because I have sinned I suffer and am in pain. To be free of my pain I must repent of my sin, confess it to God, and choose to obey and apply the truth of God’s Word. By this I can walk in victory.”

------------------------------------------------------------------
This does seem to fly in the face of scripture:
Mat 26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Mat 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

From the journeytowholeness web site:

1. There are three risks of making woundedness the root of sinfulness: ...
1) minimizes the seriousness of sin, ...
2) minimizes the glory of forgiveness and repentance, ...
3) minimizes the power of spiritual disciplines

God’s Truth:
Matthew 4:17 “From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of
heaven is at hand.”
Mark 1:14-15 “Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching that
gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is
at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”
Luke 5:31-32 “Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Those who are well have no need of a
physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to
repentance.”

2.Ed Smith says his technique is new.
This technique has been around for centuries by the New
Age Healers called Theta healers and other types of inner healers. The lie-based theology has
striking similarities to Gnostic beliefs about the cause of sin in a person’s life. Gnostics and
New Agers do not look to salvation or repentance but lie-based belief to your problem. Theta
Healers and do the same type of practice to get in touch with lie-based memories by calling in
the person’s spirit guides or angels into their memory to bring healing and if you are a Christian,
they will call your Jesus into your memory.

3. What is Theta Brain Waves?
Theta (4 to 8 cycles per second) the slowest brain cycle.
Deep meditation of emptying the mind does this. This is associated with life-like
imagination. This is best for suggestibility and inspiration. This brain wave is dominant in
children of age 2 to 5. Theta waves appear before sleep. At first your mind goes empty, and
then the feeling is replaced by creative imagination or day dreaming. Example: have you
ever been not quite a wake and not asleep and can hear everything going on around you but
you are still dreaming? That is Theta Brain Waves.

From the SO4J website-

Principle 1 - The Primary Source Of Our Present Emotional Pain Is Rarely Caused By Our Present Situation

Principle 2 - Everything We Presently Know, Feel, or are Mentally Aware of has its Roots in a First-Time Experience

Principle 3 - If We Try To Resolve Our Present Conflicts Without Resolving Our Historical Lie-Based Woundedness, We Will at Best Find Only Temporary Relief. However, If We Find Healing For Our Past We Can Redeem Our Present

Principle 4 - The Negative Emotions We Currently Feel Are ‘Echoes’ Of The Past; They Provide Opportunities For The Wounds Of Our Lives To Be Exposed

My claim is that TPM is neither prayer nor ministry as defined in the Bible. The first four key principles described by its founder show themselves to be speculative theories that have no relationship to anything taught in the Bible. There are 12 all together and the last eight take their meaning from the key ideas of the first four. If the key premises are false, the whole process is false. Must we believe that our personal interpretations of first memory events are the key to happiness and well-being? There is no ground to do so.

Thanks Boanerges, yes it does seem to fly in the face of scripture. I will have to contact the gentleman who I had the counselling session with and explain to him that I no longer want to continue. Thanks for posting.

I updated with some more info (an edit) before you posted. To be fair there is an outline of the views of it's proponents on the website aptly named theophostic - you will have to fill in the ._ _ _ in keeping with forum regulations.

If it were me I would seek counsel with a Spirit filled Pastor.

Yes thanks Boanerges. My problem is that I am between churches at the moment - I left one church because of concerns over phenomena that was happening (although some people have told me since that I should have stayed). I haven't really settled at a new church yet.

The last time my pastor did pray for me he said that he believed I should renew my mind. I have been reading lots of scripture since. But noone I have spoken to seems to know why this should be happening - the voices I mean. I think I have just one more avenue of enquiry to try next week ...

:shade:. You do not need to be a member of a church to ask for counseling though.
