Years ago I was watching a show on television about these guys who were trapping monkeys to sell in the markets. And they had a very interesting way of trapping these monkeys. There was a rock wall where the monkeys would frequent. And in this rock wall there were these naturally formed round holes. These trappers would put chunks of rock salt inside the holes, chunks just big enough to fit inside the holes.
And so these monkeys desiring to have the rock salt, would stick their hands in these holes and grab the rock salt. But when the monkeys grabbed the rock salt it caused them to make a fist with their hands. And because of the grip they had on the salt, their hand being now balled up in a fist, it would not allow them to pull their hands back out of the hole.
But what was even more interesting to me was how the monkeys would not let go of the rock salt, even when they saw the trappers coming. The monkeys saw the trappers coming, and they are tugging on their hand, and yelling and screaming, but they would not let go of the rock salt in order to set themselves free. And so the trappers just came up to them with a net and brought them into captivity.
And then the Lord brought to my mind, how people who covet and lust after the things of this world are a lot like those monkeys who just could not let go, even if it meant losing their lives. Jesus said “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
Like those monkeys, many people are willing to let themselves be tempted by their own lusts and desires, and be brought into captivity. They are willing to sell themselves out, and be brought once again into the captivity and bondage of sin; only to be ensnared by the Devil. They, like the monkeys, just can't let go.
It is written 1 Corinthians 10:13 “There has no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that you are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that you may be able to bear it.”
Peace and God bless
