Today Was The Day
By Jennifer Lynn Faust
Written on September 6th, 2013 at 9:30am
He bent to tie his shoes
And stood for one last inspection
Before the full length mirror
Today was the day
One last check
One last critical eye
One last deep breath
Today was the day
He grabbed his hat
Placed it on his crew cut head
And wobbled from the room
Today was the day
His injury slowed his progress
But there was no pain shown
On his clean shaven face
Today was the day
He marched behind the crowd that
Followed the coffin laden wagon
The coffin with the stars and stripes
Today was the day
The ceremony began
Mourners wept and hugged each other
He stood at attention
Today was the day
As the last ones slowly turned away
He walked towards the grave
And dropped to his knees
Today was the day
His eyes emptied then
His body shook
As he said goodbye to his buddy
For today was the day
