After the LORD had finished speaking to Job, he said to Eliphaz the Temanite: "I am angry with you and your two friends, for you have not spoken accurately about me, as my servant Job has. Job 42:7 NLT
Job was at the end of his endurance test. He had questioned God, and Job quickly saw that no matter how hard things were, his difficulties were insignificant when he was face-to-face with the God who made everything, knows everything, and controls everything.
Once God spoke of all that He controls and how He provides, Job realized he’d gone too far. In Job 40:3-5, Job answered: "I am nothing--how could I ever find the answers? I will cover my mouth with my hand. I have said too much already. I have nothing more to say."
This may have been the best response in the book of Job. He had spoken, and when God answered, there was no need for clarification. And as much as Job’s friends were certain they spoke the truth, God called them out for dishonesty.
Awe is the perfect way to respond to God, even when you struggle to endure another day. He knows, He cares, He comforts. When seeking answers seems like a game of hide-and-seek, remember that God can be known and that He’s always seeking you.
Prayer: Lord, may I seek Your words long enough that my questions cease and my praise begins. May my words fail me when Your words comfort me.
