Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me." For all the young man’s good behavior, Jesus knew the one thing he kept closer to his heart than God. We all have one thing that threatens God’s place on our heart’s throne.
Jesus made it personal with the young man, but with love. That’s His way. He came to save all of us; but by His Spirit, He continues that saving work on an individual basis. Jesus knows what makes us tick and what’s keeping us from knowing God and truly putting Him first.
Respecting God is not enough. He wants all of us, so as gently as Jesus could while keeping the hard truth front and center, He revealed the man’s sore spot. How the Lord’s heart must have fallen as the man walked away. When Jesus touches that one thing in your life, whatever it is, fight that urge to resist. What He has for you is harder but far better than anything the world can offer.
Prayer: Jesus, if there is anything in my heart keeping me from truly putting You first, show it to me so I can confess it and trust You with all I am.
