Recently I’ve learned about the plant called the tumbleweed. I have heard about them and seen them in old western movies but I didn’t realize what nuisances they are and the damage they can cause especially to those who farm.

The tumbleweed is thought to be indigenous to Russia, but when their seeds entered South Dakota US in shipments of flax seeds around 1870, it spread across the United States into Mexico and Canada. This plant is very prickly and very evasive. “They are considered noxious [harmful, poisonous] in nature and detrimental [tending to cause harm] in many ways. Tumbleweeds thrive with disturbed soil situations and are a major contributor to native plant extinctions and wildfires, being highly flammable and bouncing over or rapidly growing in land cleared of vegetation between fields or areas of forest as firebreaks. Despite over a century of cooperation between Mexican, Canadian, and U.S. governments to combat the species, tumbleweeds can be found in most regions of North America.” (Wikipedia)

What I found interesting about the tumbleweed is how it spreads its seeds. This weed / bush slowly dies and breaks off from its own roots. Then it tumbles around to spread its seeds all over the place. This plant is extremely hard to get rid of.

How does this look to me spiritually? Bitterness, unforgiveness, offense and even spreading lies is like a tumbleweed. In Proverbs 6:16-19, it speaks of seven things that the Lord hates…spreading lies and rumors is just one of them.

Proverbs 6:16-19 [The Passion Translation]....Seven Things God Hates

16 There are six evils God truly hates and a seventh that is an abomination to him:
17 Putting others down while considering yourself superior, spreading lies and rumors, spilling the blood of the innocent,
18 plotting evil in your heart toward another, gloating over doing what’s plainly wrong,
19 spouting lies in false testimony, and stirring up strife between friends. These are entirely despicable to God!

BE CAREFUL how you speak about others. By doing this, you are like a tumbleweed –dry, prickly, spreading your seeds about and no fruit.

I've run through drifts of these on the highways, and had them hitting my windshield in the windy dark...They are very interesting plants all right...and a total pain...Your analogy is very good...Thank you

Canadian thisle is just as bad as tumbleweeds.

Not! Try driving down the highway on a dark night, with a high wind....The tumbleweed will look like a solid wall, obscuring your view of the road as they fly by you...Thistles do not do that. Tumbleweed can get caught up under your vehicle as you drive down the freeway and cause your vehicle to burn, thistles do not do that.

Could you clarify that?
Signs and symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder and the severity of symptoms vary. People with the disorder can:

  • Have an exaggerated sense of self-importance
  • Have a sense of entitlement and require constant, excessive admiration
  • Expect to be recognized as superior even without achievements that warrant it
  • Exaggerate achievements and talents
  • Be preoccupied with fantasies about success, power, brilliance, beauty or the perfect mate
  • Believe they are superior and can only associate with equally special people
  • Monopolize conversations and belittle or look down on people they perceive as inferior
  • Expect special favors and unquestioning compliance with their expectations
  • Take advantage of others to get what they want
  • Have an inability or unwillingness to recognize the needs and feelings of others
  • Be envious of others and believe others envy them
  • Behave in an arrogant or haughty manner, coming across as conceited, boastful and pretentious
  • Insist on having the best of everything — for instance, the best car or office

I can accept that, but what does it have to do with tumbleweeds? Sorry, I'm a bit slow today.

They are the human personification of a tumbleweed. A nuisance who causes a lot of damage to others.

Canadian thisles grow in crops like wheat, and they spread like weeds very quickly, and I grew up on wheat farms in Oregon. Harvest time comes and you don't want that in the combine.
