Does God really allow people visit heaven or hell then return to the earth?
would this give them an unfair advantage over other believers?
what is God's purpose for doing so?

1 I have heard and read of people who claim to have had such experience

2 Fair/Unfair advantage as a result? These people are more aware of the future than others. Advantage? Who can tell?

3 God deals with all men with a view to their salvation. Why and for what purpose some have special revelation I do not know. One thing is clear, the closer we get to Jesus, the more intimate the revelation.

..............................

3 disciples were close to Jesus and were with Him on the Mt of transfiguration and close in Gethsemene
9 others were close but not so close as the three, but followed day by day.
70 were sent out on one occasion and came back filled with joy that even devils were subject to their words.

Just my off the cuff thoughts as I read

what i meant by advantage is that because they would have seen heaven or hell they no longer live by faith because they have seen heaven or hell.

aaron, having a revelation of heaven or hell, or even for those having seen Jesus with their own eyes, blessed as the scripture says they are by such experiences, is not an advantage for anyone. If you read the first letter of James, you`ll find that faith in God, speaks of something deeper than the 'seeing of the eyes, or hearing of the ears' Having faith, is to say, is to have put your trust in God, or to hope in Him, for what you have not yet obtained. In other words, even if having seen the promise, still requires us to have faith to obtain the promise.

James 1:1 My friends, consider yourselves fortunate when all kinds of trials come your way, for you know that when your faith succeeds in facing such trials, [faith in God]the result is the ability to endure. Make sure that your endurance carries you all the way without failing, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

Heb 10:23 Let us hold on firmly to the hope we profess, because we can trust God [faith in God]to keep his promise.

Php 1:20 My deep desire and hope [faith in God] is that I shall never fail in my duty, but that at all times, and especially right now, I shall be full of courage, so that with my whole being I shall bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die.

Hope this helps answer your question :)

Very good post Coconut, Jesus, Himself said it.

John 20:29
29 Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who haven’t seen me and believe anyway.”
