Repentance is turning away from sin.
1Kin 8:35; "When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain, because they have sinned against You, and they pray toward this place and confess Your name and turn from their sin when You afflict them,
2Kin 13:2; He did evil in the sight of the LORD, and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel sin; he did not turn from them.
2Kin 13:6; Nevertheless they did not turn away from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, with which he made Israel sin, but walked in them; and the Asherah also remained standing in Samaria.

If you turn away from sin, then (and only then) you will live.

Repentance involves turning away from sin.
Luke 13:3; "I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.

Acts 3:19; "Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord;

God says everyone must repent, even the Gentiles.

If you don't repent, there are eternal consequences.
Acts 5:31; "He is the one whom God exalted to His right hand as a Prince and a Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
Acts 11:18; When they heard this, they quieted down and glorified God, saying, "Well then, God has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life."
2Cor 7:10; For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.
2Tim 2:25; with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth,
2Pet 3:9; The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
Repentance leads to salvation. Non-repentance leads to eternal punishment.

I believe John the Baptist said it best.
who has warned you vipers of the wrath to come? Therefore bring forth gifts worthy of repentance CRYING OUT Abba Father!

True Repentance...
It looks like a sobbing, desperate, pleading, confessing of sins, forgiveness seeking, belief in Jesus, surety of God's promises...crying out mess.
At least it was for me...
but I brought forth GIFTS (for God) worthy of repentance (confessing my sins, my disgust of me, filthy, and full of shame) CRYING OUT Abba Father.
all praise glory and honor be unto God. Amen
