A friend asked me what the Bible says about divorce and I was, matter of factly, stumped. Anyone know of any direct references??

1 Corinthians 7:12-13
Matthew 5:32
Matthew 19:9
1 Corinthians 7:10-11

Though divorce is a serious matter in God's opinion (Malachi 2:16), it is not the unforgivable sin. If you confess your sins to God and ask for forgiveness, you are forgiven (1 John 1:9) and can move on with your life. If you can confess your sin to your former spouse and ask forgiveness without causing further hurt, you should seek to do so. From this point forward you should commit to honor God's Word pertaining to marriage. Then if your conscience permits you to remarry, you should do so carefully and reverently when the time comes. Only marry a fellow believer. If your conscience tells you to remain single, then remain single.

Marriage.........

Divorce is not a sin. It's being with someone else while married.. that is sin. That is called Adultery.

One poster gave a strong stance on Divorce being sin and by no means can anyone ever divorce.. She used Scripture to prove her point. (Attempted to)

I gave what the Actual scripture did say about it... and have yet to hear back from her to back up her stance and doctrine... Common when someone posted without knowing about the topic they are posting about.

You can read my response here, and I break down what Jesus Actually said about divorce, and that Jesus never did disagree with Moses..

About Divorce.

Jesus Is Lord.

If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, and if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of another man, and her second husband dislikes her and writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, or if he dies, then her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to marry her again after she has been defiled. That would be detestable in the eyes of the LORD. Do not bring sin upon the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance. Deuteronomy 24:1-6

"Why then," they asked, "did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?"

Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery." Matthew 5:32

Divorce

Telly your friend divorce always is caused by as someone else quoted scripture "hardness of heart" Divorce is always the tip of the iceburg! Most always if a couple will take the marriage as a Covenant they made before God, perhaps if they will honnor their vows they can work hard to restore their marriage. Many, many married couples have worked very hard to resolve problems (very large ones) and restore their marraiges.

If both are willing to at least look into Christian Counseling, there is a chance for restoration. Here is the clincher, it takes hard work, complete honesty, a willingness to bare all your hurt openly.

Forgiveness, seldome come fast, it takes time for love to sprout. If only couples could see the damage that comes to the children, and seldome does a second marriage word out as good as the first. A third marriage is very difficult to make it work. Only when Christ is the third member of this union will any marriage really work.

The only hope is for Jesus Christ to heal a marriage.

If anyone wants mor specfic information I would be willing to share more helps. Blessings.

thank you kindly for you answer, sure makes sense.

Just remember God is not stupid. If you divorce someone because they flat out abused you or your children I think God has a measure of mercy for that. He doesn't like to see His children hurt.
