What happens when people die?
Where do they go?

This question is answered in different ways by the different religions and people from around the world. Some views include.... it all ends at death, and others believe in reincarnation etc....

Christians however believe that when we die, we are in God's care. Our future is totally in His hands. That, after Judgement Day, all who have believed and trusted in God will receive eternal life.

I am refering to what happens immediately after death?

Does the person's soul leave the body and stay with God, or does it all just stay together until the day of judgement?

Does the Bible say anything specifically about what happens immediately after death?

This article from gotquestions.org should help

The question of what happens after death can be confusing. The Bible is not explicitly clear on when a person will reach their final eternal destiny. The Bible tells us that after the moment of death, a person is taken to Heaven or Hell based on whether he or she had received Christ as his or her Savior. For believers, after death is to be "away from the body and at home with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:6-8; Philippians 1:23). For unbelievers, after death means everlasting punishment in Hell (Luke 16:22-23).

This is where it can get confusing as to what happens after death. Revelation 20:11-15 describes all those in Hell being cast into the lake of fire. Revelation chapters 21-22 describe a New Heaven and New Earth. Therefore, it seems that until the final resurrection, after death a person resides in a “temporary” Heaven and Hell. A person's eternal destiny will not change, but the precise "location" of a person's eternal destiny will change. At some point after death, believers will be sent to the New Heavens and New Earth (Revelation 21:1). At some point after death, unbelievers will be thrown into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:11-15). These are the final, eternal destinations of all people - based entirely on whether a person had trusted Jesus Christ alone for the salvation of their sins.

There's a holding place called Sheol. You can find it some places in the Bible. Proverbs also mentions it. Where those who've died earlier, including the people of the Old Testament, that's where their spirits would be until the second coming of Jesus. I would include a video, but I'm a newbie so urls are inconvenient.

^Sheol is not hell, it's a place of the dead (as mentioned above as 'temporary heaven and hell'). No one actually goes to heaven or hell straight. There are at least 2 judgements that will be made by God. But my revelation knowledge of the Bible isn't that fully fleshed out, so that's about it I know.

Thank you for your replies.

In reference to holding place called Sheol, that seems to be correct. I have often thought there must be some place of temporary existence.

So then all people who will die, and have died, remain in this temporary state of existence until the second coming of Jesus.

Very helpful.

In the Luke chapter 16, Jesus told a parable concerning the afterlife. The parable mentioned two persons, a certain rich man and a beggar named Lazarus. Both the rich man and the beggar died, and both their souls went to a place called Hades. There is a chasm, a gulf that divides Hades into two sections: the pleasant section, where Abraham, Lazarus, and all the saved saints are (v. 22), and the section of torment, where the rich man and all the perished sinners are (vv. 23a, 28). The two sections are cut off from each other and have no bridge between them for passage. Yet those in the two sections can see and even talk to one another (vv. 23-25).

The Bible reveals to us that Hades is a temporary place where the souls and spirits of the dead are kept. Every person’s soul goes to Hades after death, regardless of whether that person believes in Jesus or not. The difference is that believers like Lazarus will be in the pleasant section (called “Paradise” and “Abraham’s bosom”) but unbelievers like the rich man will be in the section of torment.

A lot of Christians say “Believers will go up to heaven after they die”. Actually this is inaccurate. The word heaven appears twice, and the original language means sky. Some also say the Paradise is beneath the earth. However, when Jesus ascended, he went upwards. This uses Ephesians 4:8 which says, “Therefore the Scripture says, “Having ascended to the height, He led captive those taken captive and gave gifts to men””. However you cannot interpret this literally. Does Jesus just bring the dead ascending? The led captive here includes those who are living. So, we have to ask ourselves, what are we doing on earth? Eph. 4:8 the correct explanation that Jesus in His ascension grabs us from the hands of the enemy and gave as gifts to the church.

Some Christians also say in the Bible there are many mentions of us being with Christ after we die so we will also be in heavens after we die. But we need to be clear being together is not a matter of place but degree. Today we also enjoy the Lord’s presence but we’re not in the heavens. We are still on earth, Furthermore, many parts of the Bible states clearly or alludes to the fact after Christians die, they do not go to heaven. In Acts 2:34 we can see that even David did not ascend to the heavens after his death. This fact annuls the inaccurate teaching that says, based on Ephesians 4:8-10, that when Christ was resurrected, He brought Paradise, with all the Old Testament saints, from Hades into the heavens. In Revelations 6:9 we see that the martyred saints are still crying out from Paradise, the comfortable section of Hades as we’ve seen above. Since the martyred saints are still in Hades, what more to say the majority of believers.

Therefore, my understanding is that we do not go to heaven after we die. Christians go to the comfortable section of Hades. There, because we are freed from the constraints of the flesh, we can enjoy more of the Lord’s presence while waiting the resurrection and the Lord’s coming back.
