Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 1 Peter 5:8
If someone were to ask you who or what is the greatest enemy of the church today, how would you answer? Some would answer that the biggest enemy is government institutions, which in many ways are becoming more hostile toward the Christian faith. Others might say that other human institutions seem to work tirelessly to oppose the preaching of the Gospel.
While there’s no doubt that some worldly and human institutions want to keep Christianity in a corner, Christian men need to understand that they’re in a spiritual battle, not a political or physical one. The apostle Paul put it like this: “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12).
Yes, you should stand against evil in the secular world today and contend for what is right in God’s eyes. But you should never forget that your ultimate enemy is the devil, not the lost and misguided people who oppose God.
And above all, you need to remember to put on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) as you do battle against the devil and his minions.
