But he abandoned the counsel that the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him. 2 Chronicles 10:8 ESV

Everyman chooses whom he listens to.

King Rehoboam asked for counsel from the old men who served his father; but then chose to follow the counsel of “the young men who had grown up with him.” Within days, this mistake cost him most of his kingdom. It also cost him a great deal of respect and admiration.

Paul followed the counsel of Ananias, “a devout man according to the law, well spoken of by all the Jews” (Acts 22:12 ESV). As a result, he became a significant change agent in the history of the church and lived a life full of travel, danger, miracles, and intrigue.

David begins Psalm 110 with the words, “The Lord says.” When David listened to God, he became a man “after his (God’s) own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14 NIV). When he didn’t, he ruined the lives of the people he was supposed to serve.

The decisions of Rehoboam, Paul, and David remind readers that it’s usually best to follow the advice of older “well spoken of” men. Ultimately, though, your best advice comes from what “the Lord says.”

Prayer: Lord, help me carefully examine the best human advice and always follow Yours.
