I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings. Hosea 6:6 NLT
What kind of God is God? What does He want from us? Although they are about God, these questions get to the heart of what it means to be human. We want the comfort of knowing that we’re on God’s good side and that we’re doing what He wants. But it is so easy to make bad assumptions about God, even when we immerse ourselves in His Word.
Read the book of Deuteronomy, and you might think God only cares about making us follow rules. The book is filled with rules! Don’t boil a young goat in its mother’s milk (Deuteronomy 14:21). Celebrate all the feasts properly (Deuteronomy 16). Don’t wear cloth of wool and linen mixed together (Deuteronomy 22:11).
It’s true that rules and obedience are important to God—He is the source of all justice—but when we follow the rules without knowing or caring why, we’ve lost sight of who He is.
God is love (1 John 4:8). He wants us to show love to others. He wants us to seek His face, to be close enough to feel Him breathe life into our dusty frames. When we seek Him and love others, we’ll naturally do the things He wants us to do.
Prayer: God, show me more of You. Help me love like You.
