This is the beginning of a series on Why Speak God's Word. God's word is not just for reading it's also for speaking. God's word says in Hebrews 10:23 to let us hold fast to the profession of our faith. That word profession is the same word as confession which means to say the same thing. One reason to speak God's word is his word is medicine to all your flesh in Proverbs 4:20-23 it says, 20 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. 21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. 22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. 23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. That word health is translated as medicine, remedy, healing, and cure.
In Proverbs 12:18 it says that the tongue(words) of the wise is health(same word). That is when your words are in line with his words they are health. Words have effect on your body in Proverbs 15:30 it says that a good report makes the bones fat(healthy). Another reasons is found in James chapter 3 that says, My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. 2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. 3 Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. 4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
Notice what these verses are saying, in verse 3 we put bits in the horses' mouths that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. The way we control the horses' body is by the tongue, which ever way you pull the tongue his body will go. He's showing a comparison with your tongue and body. The way you turn your body is by your tongue(words). Notice, in verse 4 the ship is your body, the helm is your tongue, and you(spirit man) is the governor. Notice, the ship goes where you determine by your words. I didn't know that when I was younger when one time I ate a banana and for some reason it made me sick to my stomach even though I was eating them before just fine. And ever since then whenever someone offered me something with bananas in it I was quick to tell them how I couldn't eat bananas because they made me sick. Until I heard someone preaching on the power of positive confession when he said, "You probably ate something one time and got sick and talked about how you can't eat it". I thought wow that's exactly what happened, then he said, "If your tongue got you there then your tongue can get you out." So, I started saying, "I can eat bananas" and after a while when I was at home I walked pass the fruit bowl and I heard in my spirit, go ahead and take one and I took one and ate it with no problem and I'm still eating them just fine.
Notice, my body followed my words just like the bit in the horses' mouth and the helm of the ship. You(spirit) have authority over your body. You are not your body. In Genesis 1:26 when God said, "Let them have dominion over all the earth" He was referring to man(spirit man). Notice, in Genesis 2:7 God formed man of the dust of the earth. That's why Paul could say in 1Corinthian 9:27, "But I keep under my body, and bring it under subjection." In fact, if you look up the word body in the concordance the greek meaning of it in James 3 is a slave. What do slaves do, they follow commands. Your words are commands to your slave, the body. So, you can't afford to talk about how you get sick every time this time of year comes around. Proverbs 15:4 says, A wholesome tongue is a tree of life. If you look up that word wholesome in the concordance it's the same word health in Proverbs 4:22. So, when you speak in line with God's word your tongue becomes a tree of life. Proverbs 18:21 says, Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. You will eat the fruit of your tree.
