Assemble the people, men, women, and little ones, and the sojourner within your towns, that they may hear and learn to fear the LORD your God, and be careful to do all the words of this law, Deuteronomy 31:12 ESV
Those who pretend to be the masters of their own fates find the Christian faith scary, even foolhardy. For them, it’s more comfortable to know things and explain away apparent mysteries, including the resurrection.
Even those who should have believed in Jesus’ miracles found putting their faith in Him difficult. He cautioned them, “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” (Luke 11:29 ESV).
What kind of proof should they have been looking for? The kind that accepts miracles. The kind of faith that enables people to live in wide-eyed wonder.
Later Jesus used a metaphor to explain: “Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness. Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light." (Luke 11:34-36 ESV).
The life of wonder is the life characterized by the holy awe that Moses wrote about (Deuteronomy 31:12), and the life the psalmist sang about: “You, God, are awesome in your sanctuary” (Psalm 68:35 NIV).
Prayer: Lord, thank You for the reality of Jesus Christ’s resurrection. Help me see You at work in the world around me. Thank You for still doing miracles today.
