Judges 18 v 27-31

Then the Danites took what Micah had made and his priest and went on to Laish. They attacked those peaceful people and killed them with their swords and then burned the city. There was no one to save the people of Laish. They lived too far from Sidon, and they had no dealings with anyone else. Laish was in a valley near Beth Rehob.
The people of Dan rebuilt the city and lived there. They changed the name of Laish to Dan, naming it for their ancestor Dan, one of the sons of Israel.
The people of Dan set up the idols in the city of Dan. Jonathan son of Gershom, Moses' son, and his sons served as priests for the tribe of Dan until the land was captured. The people of Dan set up the idols Micah had made as long as the Holy Tent of God was in Shiloh.

Although a difficult section of Scripture to read, these words from the Old Testament book of Judges can only fill us with a passion for social action - a prayer for the people of this world who are marginalised, without a voice and without protection. For some countries, conflict and ethnic cleansing continue to be a recurrent theme - and as Christians it is our duty to mobilise ourselves in prayer and practical assistance, by giving to charities of repute, to send love and compassion to the people in need. One of the astonishing things about Scripture is that it can be as relevant today as it has always been throughout the centuries. It doesn't become old-fashioned or past its sell-by date, and there is always something to learn about love, life and faith from every page. Take some time out today to search on the Internet to learn more about a country which is going through internal turmoil and is suffering human rights catastrophes - and ask God for words to pray so that, spiritually, you can speak into the situation.

Our Father, fill my mouth with words of compassion and love for those whom I have never met, and yet are my neighbours in countries torn apart by war. Amen. Written by Howard Dobson
