1 Peter 1 v 17-21

You pray to God and call him Father, and he judges each person's work equally. So while you are here on earth, you should live with respect for God. You know that in the past you were living in a worthless way, a way passed down from the people who lived before you. But you were saved from that useless life. You were bought, not with something that ruins like gold or silver, but with the precious blood of Christ, who was like a pure and perfect lamb. Christ was chosen before the world was made, but he was shown to the world in these last times for your sake. Through Christ you believe in God, who raised Christ from the dead and gave him glory. So your faith and your hope are in God.

When you read the Gospels you get the impression that Peter was full of himself. For example take his statement to Jesus at the Last Supper.

"Even if everyone else deserts you Lord," he told Jesus, I WON'T!!"

Yet only hours later there he was telling people that he did not know Jesus.

In this letter, written when Peter was an old man, he is not so full of himself. We should show God respect, he writes, because he is the one who has put us where we are. Do not boast about how good you have been in your past life. That past life was worthless. Do not rely on silver or gold. Wealth can be taken away. Trust in Jesus who died for you, Trust in God who raised him from the dead.

The readers of 1 Peter lived in fear of losing everything, even their lives to Roman persecution. Peter reminds them that even if they lose everything they still have Christ. Even today the challenge is not to value these things, our own ability, our security, our standing with others, as much as our faith.

Be thou my vision O Christ. Let nothing be as important to me than knowing you and your salvation. Amen
