Judges 14 v 1-4
Samson went down to the city of Timnah where he saw a Philistine woman. When he returned home, he said to his father and mother, "I saw a Philistine woman in Timnah. I want you to get her for me so I can marry her." His father and mother answered, "Surely there is a woman from Israel you can marry.
Do you have to marry a woman from the Philistines, who are not circumcised?" But Samson said, "Get that woman for me! She is the one I want!" (Samson's parents did not know that the LORD wanted this to happen because he was looking for a way to challenge the Philistines, who were ruling over Israel at this time.)
Discerning the will of God
Samson saw this beautiful woman. His eyes popped out of their sockets as if on springs. His jaw dropped to the floor. "I must have her as my wife! I'll ask my parents to sort out the arrangements - they're good at those kind of things."
The only problem was that this lady was a Philistine. When Samson mentioned this to his parents they were upset. His parents reasoned - "Isn't there a nice Jewish girl somewhere for you?" "If we get too mixed up with those Philistines, who knows where that could lead us!"
Samson's parents wanted what was good. They wanted Samson to follow the rules. Samson, on the other hand, just wanted to have a good time.
Samson was a 'demanding' kind of a guy. "I want it now", he cries. His parents tried to advise him - but it was useless - they gave up.
The amazing thing is that neither Samson nor his parents knew what God was up to in all of this - Samson's parents did not know that the LORD wanted this to happen because he was looking for a way to challenge the Philistines, who were ruling over Israel at this time.
Doing good is important. Having a good time can seem important to us. But God's plans are more important.
Heavenly Father, help me to know your plan for my life and strengthen me to follow it. In Jesus' name. Amen.
