John 18 v 1-9
When Jesus finished praying, he went with his followers across the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and Jesus and his followers went into it.
Judas knew where this place was, because Jesus met there often with his followers. Judas was the one who turned against Jesus. So Judas came there with a group of soldiers and some guards from the leading priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns, and weapons.
Knowing everything that would happen to him, Jesus went out and asked, "Who is it you are looking for?"
They answered, "Jesus from Nazareth."
"I am he," Jesus said. (Judas, the one who turned against Jesus, was standing there with them.)When Jesus said, "I am he," they moved back and fell to the ground.
Jesus asked them again, "Who is it you are looking for?"
They said, "Jesus of Nazareth."
"I told you that I am he," Jesus said. "So if you are looking for me, let the others go." This happened so that the words Jesus said before would come true: "I have not lost any of the ones you gave me."
Jesus knew the plan that God had for Him and carried it out to the letter; similarly we should follow the plans that God reveals to us. God knows exactly what is best for us. Jesus could have let the disciples stay with Him, Peter wanted to fight and it certainly would have been a lot less lonely if Jesus had His disciples with Him to the end. As their teacher they would have obeyed Him, but it was not meant to happen like that. Jesus had to suffer alone; the Old Testament prophesies had to be fulfilled.
It is easy to deviate from God's plan when it is a hard and lonely road you have to endure a situation like standing up to discrimination in work or at home everyday because you are the only Christian. Take courage in the fact that God is in control and He honours those that lay down their lives to follow Him in everything. Trust God because He loves you and has a perfect plan that includes you in His kingdom if you choose to live for him. God will never send you into a situation that you cannot handle, He will provide you with everything you need, ask and it will be given to you. If you are in a situation and you feel out of your depth, ask God to send His Holy Spirit to give you the resources that you need.
Lord, when I am scared remind me that you are with me. When my enemies attack me, give me the strength to carry on. Lord, bless me with the resources that I need, do not send me out without equipment. May I have a determination to follow you driven by the Holy Spirit, even though the road ahead is hard. Amen.
