A week of Lent Reflections taken from "Hope in Word, Hope in Action" - storiesofhope.org.uk
Word on the Web
Hope is... a compassionate God
So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. Luke 15:20
My challenge in ministry
The National Census shows that 67.1% of the 18,656 people in St Helier parish say they are 'Christian'. On a good Sunday we only see about 1% of these people at worship. This means that there are a vast number of people, who are not from other faiths, who do not take their relationship with God very seriously. Maybe they don't really know him, or feel they are not worthy to come into his presence. Whatever the reason, many people are without the hope in the Lord Jesus that you and I have.
A reflection for Lent
I was watching a film recently where one of the characters asked "Do you think God will forgive us for what we have done?" The man clearly acknowledged the existence of God, but feared that He would be without compassion and forgiveness. The prodigal son came to his senses and went home to his father to seek his forgiveness. He planned to become one of his father's hired hands, but his father had other ideas. Like the father in the parable, God is filled with compassion for us and is looking out, ready to welcome us when we return to him.
Let us commit to praying for people in all of our communities. That they will return to God with repentant hearts and receive the hope and forgiveness that he has promised to all who sincerely turn to him.
Taken from Hope in Word, Hope in Action - 40 reflections for Lent - today written by Paul Warren, a church Planting Evangelist on the St Helier Estate, South London, working to establish a fresh expression of church, grown from and rooted within the community.
