Word on the Web

A special week by Alan Rainford, Manager of In2venture, looking at Peter's experience of Jesus through a cave trip.

Matthew 4 v 18-20

As Jesus was walking by Lake Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (called Peter) and his brother Andrew. They were throwing a net into the lake because they were fishermen. Jesus said, "Come follow me, and I will make you fish for people." So Simon and Andrew immediately left their nets and followed him.

As part of my work with In2venture we take groups caving. It is different from anything else you will experience, a place that many will never want to go (like my wife) but for many it is an exciting and challenging place. We will journey together the next few days looking at Peter's experience of Jesus through a cave trip.

We need plenty of light it is going to be so dark in the cave that our eyes will never get used to it. In fact it is so dark that when the lights are off you can snap a polo mint near your eye and see it spark. Some of you might not believe me, but you could see the surprise on peoples faces when it works (if it was not so dark). Was Peter surprised when Jesus chose him? I bet he was. Did Peter know what he was letting himself in for? I bet he didn't! We need to be continually surprised by the challenge of following Jesus. We don't know what is to come but like having an instructor who knows the cave, Jesus is our light to guide us through what is ahead and the challenges and surprises we will experience.

Jesus I need not know the path a head just give me enough light to see the next step. Amen.
