Psalm 71:4-6
My God, save me from the power of the wicked and from the hold of evil and cruel people.
Lord, you are my hope. Lord, I have trusted you since I was young.
I have depended on you since I was born; you helped me even on the day of my birth. I will always praise you.
I've had quite a few different jobs since I left school. I've worked in hotels, bars, factories, shops, homeless hostels, the police force, housing companies and environmental charities - I've even been in the mountain rescue.
Having these different jobs has meant that I have worked in quite a few different environments. But no matter what job I was in, I always saw the "power of the wicked" and felt the "hold of evil and cruel people".
Sometimes I was the person who that wickedness and evil was directed towards, but more often than not I saw people being wicked, evil and cruel to others. Usually I found it easy to see that evil and cruelty - but there were also many times when it was a lot less obvious but still very destructive, hurtful and damaging.
God clearly watches over me and protects me from evil and cruelty. I did get very hurt at times and no doubt will in the future, but this will not stop me from trusting in God. However, for others the evil and cruelty that they have experienced can cause them to lose their trust in God and for some even lose their ability to trust and believe that anyone would care for them.
But we know that we can place all our trust in the Lord our God - he is the only perfect person anyone can trust to rescue them from evil and cruel people. We need to get that message out to people.
Sometimes this involves telling people about him and his son Jesus - but more often than not this involves gaining peoples trust first and then sharing the message with them. Ask the Lord to show you how.
Lord, the cruelty and evil in this world have broken people's trust in each other. Help me to restore people's trust by leading them to trust in you.
