Matthew 22 v 37-39
Jesus answered, " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.' This is the first and most important command. And the second command is like the first: 'Love your neighbour as you love yourself.'
Recently a filmmaker produced a documentary about the people that lived on her street, none of whom she had previously met. The result was a fascinating insight into their everyday lives. One man was suffering from cancer and his immediate neighbours drew up a rota to drive him to and from his frequent hospital appointments. He commented that he had expected some sympathy at first, but what he hadn't expected was such committed support - not one neighbour had dropped off the rota. This was an inspiring example of neighbourly love and made me immediately think of ways that I could show love to my own neighbours.
The world is getting smaller however and our neighbours are not just the people that live immediately next door. Through technology and cheap travel we are now increasingly connected with people who live on the other side of the world to us. Globalisation brings benefits, and also responsibilities. Every day decisions (what to eat, what to wear, how to travel) have a direct impact on our neighbours in the developing world.
Christian Aid works with partners in poor communities to help them help themselves. You can help by visiting Christian Aid . The little things also make a difference: buying fair-trade chocolate, signing a campaign postcard, getting more aware about international issues - they're all ways of showing neighbourly love on a global scale.
Dear Lord, show me what I can do to show love to my neighbours - whether they live in the next house or the next continent. Amen.
