Psalm 71:7-11
I am an example to many people, because you are my strong protection.
I am always praising you; all day long I honour you.
Do not reject me when I am old; do not leave me when my strength is gone.
My enemies make plans against me, and they meet together to kill me.
They say, "God has left him. Go after him and take him, because no one will save him."
I don't think I'm old, but if you look at me the signs are starting to show. There's a few grey bits appearing and as my wife said the other day "Don't wax your hair like that as it makes you look bald, wax it the other way it makes you look less bald!!"
So ok, like any well-travelled and used object, I'm starting to show signs of wear. But aren't your comfiest jeans or trainers your oldest ones? If you want to feel comfortable and relaxed chilling out at home, I bet the clothes you like to wear are nice comfortable old and worn ones!
This is the argument I use to my wife - to convince her to stay with someone who looks less bald as long as he waxes his hair in a certain way. But of course I'm only kidding. She stays with me because she loves me. We made promises in front of God when we got married that not matter how frail, ill or weak we got we would always be there for each other. In making those promises, we were only making the same promises God has made to us.
Our reading today sounds like someone who is reminding God about all the praising of him they have done, followed by them pleading to God to not leave them when they are tired or old as they feel that it is then when their enemies will attack.
But God will never abandon us, no matter how old, tired or bald we get. We do not need to be afraid at times of weakness when it seems that our enemies will attack, because it is at those times that God's protection for us will be at its strongest.
At times of tiredness and weakness we can often feel alone Lord and exposed to attack. Help us remember that you are always there for us as our protector.
