Philippians 4 v 1-4
My dear brothers and sisters, I love you and want to see you. You bring me joy and make me proud of you, so stand strong in the Lord as I have told you.
I ask Euodia and Syntyche to agree in the Lord. And I ask you, my faithful friend, to help these women. They served with me in telling the Good News, together with Clement and others who worked with me, whose names are written in the book of life. Be full of joy in the Lord always. I will say again, be full of joy.
There is a special bond between those who have served God in some sort of mission together. Whether or not the experience is great at the time, we look back with joy. For a period in my life I helped lead a team on a Beach Mission in Towyn in North Wales. Well, not really a beach mission, as we held it in a church yard, but it had the same ingredients. One year we slept in the damp, cold basement of another church; the next on Second World War army camp beds. Sleep deprivation, team disputes, church politics - it wasn't always easy, but I loved it.
I think we are made for mission - there is something instinctively within us which compels us to share our faith - we know it is too good to be kept to ourselves. So today a simple challenge - give serious thought to signing up for some form of short term mission this year. Beach missions, holiday clubs, overseas trips, building orphanages in Rumania - whatever God calls you to, just do it. Perhaps even consider taking a year out to serve God?
God, thank you for the privilege and the joy of being able to tell others the Good News. Thank you that all you require is a willing and obedient heart. Help me to hear your call, and to respond in faith. Amen
