John 18 v 28-32
Early in the morning they led Jesus from Caiaphas's house to the Roman governor's palace. They would not go inside the palace, because they did not want to make themselves unclean; they wanted to eat the Passover meal. So Pilate went outside to them and asked, "What charges do you bring against this man?"
They answered, "If he were not a criminal, we wouldn't have brought him to you."
Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law."
"But we are not allowed to put anyone to death," the Jews answered.(This happened so that what Jesus said about how he would die would come true.)
"What charges do you bring?"
I love that. If the Pharisees wanted to condemn any of us they would easily be able to find charges. They would remind us of the horrible things we did in childhood, the insults thrown at various people across our time, mistakes we made growing up, anything we'd wished we'd done or hadn't done.
They'd expose our character flaws. They'd point to our insecurities, point out low self-esteem, falseness and pride. We'd see ourselves. They'd demonstrate how unlovable we are, how undeserving and yet how ungrateful. There'd be a million charges.
What charges for Jesus then? None. None whatsoever. His life was nit-picked and scrutinised for 3 years and... nothing.
Saying Jesus is perfect is an understatement. But He was still human. We sometimes forget He had dirty nappies as a kid, been hungry in the desert and felt pain on the cross. He did. But His life remained flawlessly perfect - He loved through to the end.
In His humanity we see anything can be overcome and left behind - we must live in His strength and sanctification. He's shown us it's possible and faces our storms beside us.
"If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot disown himself." (2 Timothy 2:13)
Father, Helper. I want to be pure and know that You have set us free to live for You. Lord help me to live in that. Come alongside me and deal with the places where I struggle. Help me look to and depend on You for that. Amen
