Word on the Web
A special week by Alan Rainford, Manager of In2venture, looking at Peter's experience of Jesus through a cave trip.
Bible
Matthew 8 v 24-27
A great storm arose on the lake so that waves covered the boat, but Jesus was sleeping. His followers went to him and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We will drown!"
Jesus answered, "Why are you afraid? You don't have enough faith." Then Jesus got up and gave a command to the wind and the waves, and it became completely calm.
The men were amazed and said, "What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!"
The journey together continues looking at Peter's experience of Jesus through a cave trip.
We start to walk down the stream way, we become aware of the cave environment, we hear the sounds of the flowing water. We begin to see a totally different view of God's creation. We see stalagmites and stalactites and fossils in the rock, we begin to think about how the cave has been formed. How many years does it take for stalactites and stalagmites to form or the passage get so big? Many questions about creation are raised in me - was this achieved as part of the six day 24 hour period view of creation or was it over a period of time what about evolution etc.
Peter was starting to trust Jesus more but it did not stop him having doubts, did Jesus not care that they were about to drown, who is this even the wind and waves obey him? We are faced with many questions and doubts about what we believe or don't believe. We need to be honest with ourselves and with people we trust (the people who will not judge us for our doubts or our questions) as Peter worked through his doubts and would grow in his faith so will we.
Jesus like Peter I have many doubts help me to be honest with myself and not try to pretend they do not exist help me with your help and close friends to come to terms with them. Amen.
