Word on the Web

Judges 15 v 14-20

Then the men from Judah said, "We agree, we will just tie you up and give you to the Philistines. We will not kill you." So they tied Samson with two new ropes and led him up from the cave in the rock. When Samson came to the place named Lehi, the Philistines came to meet him, shouting for joy. Then the Spirit of the Lord entered Samson and gave him great power. The ropes on him weakened like burned strings and fell off his hands! Samson found the jaw-bone of a dead donkey, took it, and killed a thousand men with it! Then Samson said, "With a donkey's jaw-bone I made donkeys out of them. With a donkey's jaw-bone I killed a thousand men." When he finished speaking, he threw away the jaw-bone so that place was called Ramath Lehi.

Samson was very thirsty, so he cried out to the Lord, "You gave me, your servant, this great victory. Do I have to die of thirst now? Do I have to be captured by the people who are not circumcised?" Then God opened up a hole in the ground at Lehi, and water came out. When Samson drank, he felt better he felt strong again. So he named that spring Caller's Spring, which is still in Lehi. Samson judged Israel for twenty years in the days of the Philistines.

Samson's strength

I like films about super heroes. Characters like Superman and Spiderman take us to a world beyond our own; one with unimaginable power.

In the real world where I live - I go to the gym once a week and less often twice a week. I exercise with weights of 20-30 kilos and feel the better for it. But this is puny in comparison to the man who defeated ferocious predatory animals with his bare hands and thousands of men with a donkey's jawbone.

Throughout his life, Samson knew extraordinary strength at times when God's Spirit empowered him with divine ability.

Films that use special effects - like the superheroes films such as Batman or the Hulk are showing us something that is beyond our own world - a power we cannot easily understand or grasp. Samson's life shows us a power that is beyond our world - but in contrast to many modern films, a power that is available to us through God's Holy Spirit.

But, this power is not given that we might get the better of other people or overcome the inhabitants at the local zoo. It is given to strengthen us to live for God.

Maybe we can offer our own jawbones to God? Let's use them to speak about Jesus; offering words of forgiveness and hope to the people we know.

Heavenly Father, may my actions, words and my thoughts be pleasing to you and helpful to others. Amen.
