Word on the Web
2 Corinthians 1:1-7
From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus. I am an apostle because that is what God wanted. Also from Timothy our brother in Christ.
To the church of God in Corinth, and to all of God's people everywhere in Southern Greece:
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is the Father who is full of mercy and all comfort. He comforts us every time we have trouble, so when others have trouble, we can comfort them with the same comfort God gives us. We share in the many sufferings of Christ. In the same way, much comfort comes to us through Christ. If we have troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation, and if we have comfort, you also have comfort. This helps you to accept patiently the same sufferings we have. Our hope for you is strong, knowing that you share in our sufferings and also in the comfort we receive.
Do you write letters, texts, emails or blogs to your friends? Perhaps you're on Facebook or Myspace. I wonder what news or personal information you share? (Do always be careful not to share too much on-line).
Paul and Timothy knew some of the people they were writing to better than others. They also knew that news about Jesus is always good news, and wanted to share it with Christians throughout the world they knew. Their letter was to be passed on by hand and read to people throughout Greece. Today we thank God we can share His good news globally through the World Wide Web.
Paul and Timothy could easily have written gloomy letters about their lives and the state of the world. They had been in many difficult and dangerous situations, often persecuted because of their faith in Jesus. But, because of their relationship with God through knowing Jesus as their Saviour, they remain positive even at the toughest times. In their experience God had always shown up to help and comfort them when they needed Him. They share this experience with the Greek Christians to encourage them, knowing that they also face real difficulties and hardship and that God can help them too.
I hope you too can be encouraged by this hope today, or can encourage someone else by sharing your story of how God has helped you.
Thank you Lord, for your love and faithfulness towards me. Please help me to seek and find you when I face hard situations and also to bring your comfort and hope to others in similar situations. Amen.
